KROQ did play it and it was the KIQQ "Pick Hit of the Week" in Southern Cal. And it was out around the same time as Nena's "99 Luftballoons" [:)] I didn't hear this song for ages until recently. My most recent song I completely forgot all about and then discovered (in this casefrom MFV). It's also amazing what you can find on YouTube.

And a further crack up--do what I just did--go to that site http://www.righeira.com. It's under Construction but clearly these guys do have a sense of humor. There's a page linked that makes it seem like these two guys are still performing: http://www.righeira.info/

Back in 1983--my sister who was fluent in Spanish at the time gave me this odd look when the song came on, and she said the lyrics do not sound quite right (and this is from someone who didn't know until two years ago that "Every Breath You Take" was about stalking). She said something about fish in a flourescent sea. [:)]

Vamos a la Playa is MUCH better than No Tengo Dinero

It also has a non-performance video on YouTube

Hutter--Much thanks for the link!
. . .
However, I have to agree on Schwenko on this one. Vamos reaches for that 80s strangeness we know so well . . .

You say tomato, I say ketchup [:D]
Whatever floats your boats, guys. At least we can agree that both songs have their peculiar charms.

I wish I knew what the hell they were singing about.
I love the new wave dancing with a little latin twist going on in the video.

Marie, it's either that nuclear war is currently happening or the scenario is post-apocalyptic. I'm not sure. It's still a strange song. And for clearer context, "vamos a la playa" is a general expression term to make the best of things when something awful or unfortunate happens (my sister at least knew that, back then, even though she totally missed what the song was about!)

http://www.nomorelyrics.net/song/184789.html is the original lyrics. You can translate them in Babelfish:

http://babelfish.altavista.com/

Use Spanish to English.

It's interesting that with two songs on pretty much the same theme (but in another language) that were out around the same time--Nena hit it big, while in the States, at least, Righeira remained in obscurity. Maybe Righeira should've found someone to do a lousy translation for them, too.

Oh, and Schwenko--I did find the other video in youtube. The URL is

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q4e1V3HM ... ed&search=

Oh, and one other possibility if we want to try to be literal is that a nuclear power plant accident happened near a beach..

Maybe some of the confusion in their lyrics could be due to them being an Italo-disco band that, instead of phonetically singing in english, sang in spanish. If we want to get a better idea of just what the hell they were saying, why not ask Opera Prima (Spain) and cafebizarre (Italy) to further enlighten us? Maybe they can translate the finer points and end the confusion.

Righeira's album was one of those "what the hell is this?" things I picked up at Salvation Army for 50 cents. (It's a Canadian pressing - I don't think they got a U.S. deal.) I just bought it for the cover art, but I ended up liking "Playa" and "Dinero" quite a bit -- which is no mean feat, because I don't much care for Italo disco. The rest of the record is flat-out filler, but put it all together, and you get songs sung in 4 or 5 different languages. Weird that the singles ended up being the Spanish songs.

Which one of those clips came first? 'Cause I like this one better.
