Don't forget that the DVD is coming out 9/20 - 2 disc set. First disc is all their videos; the second is the documentary "New Order Story." The title of this DVD is "Item."

This is right around the corner. So who's getting this? It's certainly superior to any of their greatest hits but it's no Retro with its wealth of extra material or even Substance with its alt mixes and some b-sides. Is anyone with their entire studio collection going to bother? Or is this for new fans or folks who never bought their stuff to gather the basics in one fell swoop?

I think this is going to have all single mixes, some of which (I think) have never been on CD. I'll wait for the US issue - I think it is coming in December.

I love Substance, but it always irked me that Substance CD1 did not include the full 12" single mix of the Perfect Kiss on the CD in the US ("all these crabs..."). I remember my first listen, wondering why the song ended about 90 seconds early. I heard they had to chop the song to make everything fit on one CD, but damn, that was a tough cut to hear.

Of course, now that the full 17-minute Elegia has been released, who knows what other versions NO has floating around the vaults?

And does anybody else wish that there was a true instrumental version of Thieves Like Us? The "instrumental" version that has been released wipes out the best parts of the song. Good thing Thieves Like Us has that extended intro anyway. Gives me chills each time, around the 2.5 minute mark.

I picked this one up in Toronto this weekend.
Strange that they include Blue Monday and Blue Monday '88, but NOT Blue Monday '95.
And no Murder-that was a single, right?
Oh..Turn is the last track on CD2..Not a single (yet)

AND it is a classic New Order song. The basslines, guitar riffs, drumming and lyrics...hugely underappreciated track! I know I'm going to convince Schwenko of this someday. [^][;)]

The US version comes out 12/6. It also includes "Turn (7" version)" (which I think is on the UK as well, but perhaps skipped by the original poster). The US bonus track is "Temptation (Secret Machines Remix)."

What about "Temptation"? Is it the ORIGINAL 7" (clocking in at 5 and change)? It's never been on CD as far as I know. For some reason, that horrid re-recording is always substituted.

Has anyone heard if there will be one more US single from WFTSC. I see that NO has split several of the b side mixes (edits) from the 7# singles on the Japanese and US editions of the Singles Cd, but there are full versions of these tracks BLT (richard x) and Temptation (secret machines) on a promo cd single. I figured that since Turn has yet to be released that maybe they will put these out on CD single to promote the US Singles comp CD. Confused I Am????

Indeed Rewind, I think it's only been on CD in Bootleg form, the 4CD International-2 collection among perhaps others. The 12" version is on Retro. BUT...it is indeed the 7" version on Singles! Hmmm, damn, will I have to get it just for that?! Especially when Schwenko provided me with International-2 long ago?? [:p]

Side note. Wikipedia amazes me with its content. I remember looking up info on Temptation awhile ago when I was sending a bunch of versions to design_femme - I wanted to have all my tags correct. I was floored to see an entire Wikipedia article on Temptation (and many other songs) come up in the search...

"Temptation is a single released by British group New Order on Factory Records in April 1982.

Released on 12 and 7 inch vinyl, both formats had the catalogue number FAC 63. The two formats are not merely different mixes, but entirely separate recordings of the same song. The 7" version is a more structured version with a commercial synthpop feel; the 12" is more chaotic with the emphasis on electronic rhythms rather than melody. The 7" version plays at 33.3rpm to accommodate its length of around five and a half minutes.
Interestingly, the 7" version has a cold start and a fade-out at its end, and the 12" version has a fade-in at its start, with a cold end. As a result, a popular rumour among New Order fans that to experience the complete "Temptation", one has to paste together the 7" and 12" versions, so there is a cold start and a cold end. Despite the speculation, the band has never confirmed this to be true.

The vocal track on the original 12" version (this is the version featured in the 'Retro' box-set) features an audible scream during the song's intro. Supposedly, as Bernard was recording the vocals, other band members ran into the studio and thrust a snowball down his shirt.

Other appearances

Both "Temptation" and its B-side "Hurt", appear on the 1987 compilation Substance, albeit in slightly different forms. "Temptation 87", which can be roughly described as having a similar arrangement to the 7" but the structure of the 12", is probably the best-known version of the song. Partly due to this version's appearance on the best-selling Trainspotting soundtrack, it is now one of New Order's best-known recordings. It is also the song the group have played live more than any other.
Both cuts from the 12" single appeared on the mopping up EP 1981-1982, which also contained the "Everything's Gone Green" single.
An updated remix of Temptation by CJ Bolland appeared on the 1995 remix compilation ? - The Rest Of New Order.
In 1998 New order reformed after a stormy break up five year's previously, the group decided to rerecord a new version of "Temptation". The new recording was similar to the 1987 version, but omitted the long intro, it runs just 4.08, this version was named "Temptation '98".
A remix of Temptation by Secret Machines was released on the b-side of the "Waiting For The Sirens' Call" single in September 2005.
A cover of Temptation can be found on Moby's 2005 album Hotel."

LOL! Wikipedia's GOT to be on everyone's bookmark list.

Whew!! Thanks!

Just some side notes: the ORIGINAL 7" version is available on the "Something Wild" soundtrack, but in an edited form. The original 12" is also on the Devolution compilation from '95.

Well Sean, the confounding rationale of New Order continues. I knew immediately that "1963" wasn't the single I'd originally heard. This list seems to bear out that and some other head scratching choices and descriptions...
