The Pale Fountains: The Complete Virgin Years, 4CD Box Set

The Pale Fountains: The Complete Virgin Years, 4CD Box Set

Postby Last Film Star » Tue Apr 29, 2025 2:05 am

• The Pale Fountains were an English band formed in Liverpool in 1980, and composed of Mick Head, Chris McCaffery, Thomas Whelan, Andy Diagram and Ken Moss.

• Inspired by 1960s music such as Love, Burt Bacharach and The Beatles, the group released their debut single ‘(There's Always) Something on My Mind’ in October 1982. Although the Pale Fountains failed to make much commercial headway, the band would earn critical praise for the two albums released on Virgin, ‘Pacific Street’ (1984) and ‘...From Across the Kitchen Table’ (1985).

This 4-CD box set brings together both albums as well as all the B-Sides, mixes, and some previously unreleased material from the Virgin vaults all housed in a sturdy box with extensive sleeve notes by Classic Pop’s John Earls.

Mick Head – Vocals, Guitar (1981–1987) Chris McCaffery – Bass Guitar (1981–1987) Thomas Whelan – Drums (1981–1987) Andy Diagram – Trumpet (1982–1984) John Head – Guitar (1984–1987)

Will certainly be on the lookout for this, intrigued to hear the 1985 version of "Thank you"

The wealth of unreleased material makes this set very good value, but don't get excited about the 1985 Thank You as it's just the familiar version, first released on the 1982 single produced by Robin Millar. This appeared again on Side 3 of the double 7" pack for the ...From Across the Kitchen Table single in 1985 (Discogs link) along with a previously-unreleased (in 1985) recording of Just a Girl, also produced by Robin Millar.

It's possible that the compilers of this box were confused by the new (in 1985) Just a Girl, or someone misremembered, but as they were doing so they also forgot to include the 7" single version of ...From Across the Kitchen Table which at 3:33 could easily have been added to Disc 4 of the box.

The other potential confusion, given that Thank You is erroneously listed as Thank You (Remix) on Disc 2 of the box, is that the original 1982 Thank You 12" featured a remix of the original (There's Always) Something On My Mind from the Operation Twilight/Les Disques du Crépuscule single. Although that one does appear on Disc Two of the box.

However, these are minor gripes - if you're a fan, get this now before it's deleted and the used price becomes silly.
