what's missing from the eurythmics reissues?

well: let's see.
(i'm leaving out live b-sides, because i will go on record as saying that they irritate me; and the first album reissue picks up a few from the "this is the house" single anyway. but i'm not mentioning them! I'M NOT!)

"in the garden" era:
this is the house- alternate version, and very good.

"sweet dreams" era:
step on the beast
the walk part 2 (fabulous)
invisible hands
dr. trash
let's just close our eyes (the walk reworked)
i could give you a mirror (alternate)
sweet dreams extended (on the first greatest hits, but not here?)
(they put the horrible '91 remixes of "dreams" and "love is a stranger"!!! WHY?)

"touch" era:
who's that girl? extended
right by your side (party mix)
right by your side (extended)
right by your side (special :59 version)
i've got an angel (dub)
(sadly, there was never a proper 12" "here comes the rain"- oh sure, there was a 12" release, but it's the album version with like 5 seconds more in the fade. gyp! no dub effects or drum machine breaks. wah!)
sexcrime 1984 extended
ministry of love extended
(don't be fooled! the extended julia is the album version)
(and where did the extended room 101 i have on mp3 come from? it's not official is it?)

"be yourself tonight" era:
here comes that sinking feeling -alternate
would i lie to you extended (non-e.t.)
there must be an angel- special dance mix (stripped down and fab)

"revenge" era:
when tomorrow comes (orchestral)
(and here is where they start the live version b-sides. which i find tedious! depeche mode did this too, as if to prove to everyone that their songs actually sounded good out of the studio too! don't hate us cuz we play synthesizers! and remember, as far as live version b-sides go i'm not listing them here)

"savage" era:
beethoven -dance mix
you have placed a chill- dance mix
do you want to break up? - dance mix
you have placed a chill - acoustic
you have placed a chill - chill mix
(and so starts the acoustic versions, which reach crisis point by next album)
(it's nice to have the "shame" mix on the reissue, but where is the "you have placed a chill" and "break up" mixes? and what about the crazy-hard-to-find fan-club-flexi dance mix of "i've got a lover back in japan"?
wah!)

"we too are one" era:
revival- extended dance mix
rich girl
when the day goes down- acoustic
don't ask me why- acoustic
my my baby's gonna cry- acoustic
king and queen of america dub mix- (really good, btw)
missionary man- acoustic (hey! two albums ago! thanks!)
my my baby's gonna cry remix

"greatest hits" era:
well, don't despair if you want that awful coldcut remix and nightmare mix! they are inexplicably on the sweet dreams reissue! and don't fit! and there's tons of stuff that could have gone on instead! BOO RCA!

"peace" era:
who cares? just kidding, but there weren't a ton of remixes anyway.

so there we have it, but i probably left a thing or two (like live versions) out here and there. now i see what ms. lennox was grousing about when the promos leaked out two years ago- there's a lot left off!

and i wonder if maybe we are getting the eventual boxset treatment, like the cure's "join the dots"... i hope so. the fact that the 12" versions were sparingly included on the reissues leads me to believe that. of course, maybe it will never happen, as a comprehensive duran duran b-sides has never happened. (and yes, i know, they are on cd finally in the singles boxsets. but not all on one cd.)

comments? concerns?
i do this because i CARE.
;-)

edit: two songs also floating around: "revenge part 2" from the soundtrack to a movie called "rooftops" (late 80's); annie's vocals on a robert gorl song called "charlie cat" (1984). oh, and i mention an excellent chris and cosey collaboration two posts down.

Bruiser- Thanks for doing all the footwork... I started but gave up very quickly [:)]

They certainly have room on the re-issues for these on most of the disks. In The Garden e.g. is about 53 minutes long. Definitely a disappointment!

I'm wondering what is available on Cd already that is on your list. For example, Sex Crime extended...I have the cd single release of that (at home). I would think it was on there.

well, as far as i can see:

the original 12" of "sweet dreams" is on the first greatest hits.
the extended 12" of sexcrime is on your early (1985) cd single!
the "beethoven" dance mix is on its cd single
the "shame" dance mix is on its cd single
"i need a man" macho mix (on the reissue) was a cd single
the acoustic "you have placed a chill" is on a cd single
the chill mix of "you have placed..." is on an obscure dj cd from 1988
the "revival" dance mix is on its cd single
the acoustic "when the day goes down" and "don't ask me why" are too
"missionay man" acoustic is on the angel cd single
(my my) baby's gonna cry remix & acoustic are on its cd single

there is also a song they did with chris and cosey called "sweet surprise" (which is SSSEEEEXXXXYYYY) that is on a recentish c&c comp cd... the original song was recorded in 84? 85?

i think that's it. i don't know that any of the original extendeds have made it to the myriad "12 inch 80's" collections of the last few years. anyone?

Wow, bruiser, this is a lot of work and research! Thanks! I'm not a big fan of all the remixes, per se, but it's sad to see some of the b-sides not make it onto these new releases. Hopefully they'll release a rarities disc at some point to get everything out there.

I myself was trying to make a list of those Kirsty MacColl songs still not available on CD, given the fact that a lot of her stuff was rereleased, with bonus tracks, and also the 3-disc anthology; but I gave up on it, so I can really appreciate the effort you made here. Thanks again!

Great post!
I agree about the new mixes, especially the horrible obsession mix of "Stranger"

I Love the Right by your Side (extended), 10 or 11 min. mix!![:p]
It's a shame that they didn't remaster "1984", they treat it like like the ugly stepchild!!
What was Ministry of Love extended on, the Sexcrime B-side?
I've never heard the extended room 101[:0]

Revenge Part 2 is gonna be on Revenge

Most of the stuff from Savage on was available on CD, so I'm not too worried about that stuff.
But it would be nice to have it remastered on a rarities comp.[:D]

What's the Chris and Cosey Comp. called, I have the 12" of that track & it's GREAT!! I haven't been able to listen to the record in about 10 years[B)]

Basically from Beethoven on CD singles were issued.

The Sexcrime single was a reissue 3" & 5 " single.

iTunes in the US has put several remixes missing from the re-issues up for purchase download, including Right By Your Side, Who's That Girl and Would I Lie To You.

I'm *hoping* they do more, especially You Have Placed a Chill in my Heart. Does anyone have a good quality digital version of the Chill mix? (the single version, not the extended "dance" mix)?

I would also love to hear the early version of This is the House, I've never heard of it before.

On the Sweet Dream live video/DVD there is a song that they do as an encore. It's some French pop/Jaques Brel tune. Anyone know what it is and where to find it?

it's Tous les garcons et les filles. It was the b-side to the "It's Alright" single (although it was recorded much earlier.) It can be found on the recent reissue of the "Be Yourself Tonight" CD.

Just for the info, this song is not by Jacques Brel but by Francoise Hardy from 1963 [:)]
