This is just a thought..
With all the digitized music content presently out there in cyberspace, would it be possible to use some audio analysis algorythm/app along the lines of what Pandora/ iTunes uses to find a possible matching vocal/synth pattern/profile to an existing recording artist? Perhaps someone with ties to those services would like to take this on as a pet project? Even someone with ties to the field of Audio Forensics might help. http://www.audioforensics.com/index.htm

I registered a few weeks ago but it seems impossible to listen to the song. It seems like it might actually be a request for the song (there is an upload link, but not a download link), and not actually the song, but I could be wrong. I sent a message and the youtube link to the person who posted it asking for their help but haven't gotten a response.

Sent the band an email with a link to the song...I am working on a show that will air July 26th, with Peter Godwin who worked with them on "Love is a Shield". When Peter returns from filming his new video "Chocolate", I'll send him the clip as well.

daydreamer Posted - 06/21/2010 : 01:14:51
Awwww. GT strikes again.

Let me translate this into proper English:

"A fellow professional musician (both composer and recording studio boss) told me that because of certain characteristic "shortcomings", this could in no way be an ordinary (final) production, and in fact be an early recording by the German new wave band "Camouflage" [1], winner of a competition presented by a German radio station with their song contribution from one of their demo tapes.
Most probably the song the whole world has been hunting for all those years *IS* exactly this contributed song on their demo tape, whose title is not known to me to this day, though."

[1][known for "The Great Commandment", 1987, and "Love Is A Shield"]
crichert Posted - 06/19/2010 : 12:37:40
There's no way this is Camouflage, it sounds nothing like them.

Panorama Posted - 06/19/2010 : 04:56:41
I received the following comment on the song from a person called Terascon on youtube:

So I went to Google translation http://translate.google.com and here is what the message translates as:
"A friend and professional musician (composer and recording studio owner) said that the opening could be because of certain deficiencies not a normal production, and it would act may be an early marketing of the German new wave group "Camouflage". These ranged in fact in 1986 the song contest of a German radio station a demo tape and won the first prize. It is probably looking at this song demo recording, whose title I do not know exist."

Hmm, now this one seems very, very likely.

Released between 1984 and 1986? Check.
Practically unknown? Check.
From an European country? Check.
Sung in English? Check.
Pop/Rock? Check.

Unfortunately it's impossible to find a copy on sale anywhere.

I hate to be a nay sayer, but to me Jean Marc's vocals have more of a nasal quality to them. I don't think its The Box, but it would be fun to see what their CKOI entry would have sounded like.
The scary thing is that there were so many radio station contests all over the world in the 80s (Here in Toronto, we had The Great Ontario Talent Search, Q107 Homegrown and a few others) that produced some great music. Hopefully, one day, somebody in the band will stumble accross this forum and solve the mystery for us. And the single will probably get released since so many of us want it.
Psyklist Posted - 04/30/2010 : 01:02:15
I'll throw this out there and see what people think...

The vocals in the mystery song resemble Jean-Marc Pisapia's vocals of the Canadian band The Box---even more so if the song is sped up. Also, the song's style resembles The Box's style.

The Box, which was originally named Checkpoint Charlie around 1981, entered a song in CKOI-FM's Homegrown contest in 1983 and won. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the name of their winning song and couldn't find any correlation between The Box and our mystery song.

Could this be The Box or Checkpoint Charlie? Could this be The Box's song that won the CKOI-FM contest in '83?

(More about The Box here: http://jam.canoe.ca/Music/Pop_Encyclopedia/B/Box.html)

Ronny's Pop Show was mainly a videoclip based program intercut with some comedy style stuff by Ronny (a monkey) - the compilations normally featured big hits that appeared in the show.

This is a long shot (what isn't?) but I just found out about this German program that ran from 1982-1988 called "Ronny's Pop Show" and they put out several music compilations up til about the late 90's. Most the stuff was major pop hits, but as it's German it also included some "obscure" songs, at least by American standards. My thoughts are, if anyone could get in touch with the people behind Ronny's Pop Show, perhaps being a German music oriented program they may know about this song.

Not exactly sure how to do this however, but it is a suggestion.

Well It's 2 years since I posted the clip to youtube (on 8/25/07)... 18,048 views which is nice... many comments, guesses, suggestions, but still no definitive answer. Certainly, It's nice that more people are aware of the song... keeping the faith that someday the song will be identified.

But maybe some Side-Project of the singer or some demo?

Yeah. It has no melody and isn't half as good as "Passion Play" by Still Life. Whose lead singer, Jon Newby, also sounds the same as the mystery song. He isn't. But he sounds like him.

I never heard of "Passion Play" by D.I.A. and I quite like it. The lead singers voice sure does fit the mold of "Stay (The Second Time Around)"

its that possibl that the Song can be from the year 1987-88?
or still sure its from 1984-86?

i think the sound its like 1986-1988.....i hear that song about 20 times in repeat modus..i think its not 1984!!!!
and i think that song was not played on sounds from synthesizer...on HR3..because the radio show was still finished on 1985!
from he quality and art of this track i cant believe that this song its ony from a demo tape!!! i think the record, maybe only as a promo record was produced!
i will check on german music history the years 86-88....maybe i an found some interesting track

for me its possible that the song have the name "Don´t go..or Dont´let you go"
water7 Posted - 12/03/2008 : 06:32:52
I thinking the last days about to much for this track we are all searching for.my theorie is that the name from that song are not "Stay" or Second time around" I believe that the ex- member of this loosing Band have Internet at home too...and its also normally that they are checking somethings about herself...maybe thinking somebody talk for a old song on internet...i think for a musican its that interesting..
When this Track is from 1984 on the Radiostation HR 3 and "Sounds from Synthesizer" brodcast,i will believe that the Song is from a German Newcomer New Wave Band and the track is never pressed on Vinyl!!!
In this radio brodcast was many German Newcomer Bands to play her Tapes and Demos, but many never released on Vinylrecord.
When this Song is from 1986 and NDR Radiostation we are get a good chance that the Song is pressed on a record, maybe only as a promorecord.
I am searching on a German Music History where you can found every record there are released in german from 1976 to today!!!
I try many different words..."Say",Second,Time,2nd,Roof Top,Blue Sky...but not found somethings very interesting...

http://dispatch.opac.d-nb.de/DB=2.1/HTML=Y/

You can search here and found every record from the year 1976 to 2008
