Touring again billed as Stan and Friends. Anyone got the scoop on this? Who are these so called friends? What music is he doing? Yadda, yadda, yadda.

I could be wrong, but I think the "special friends" are just his touring group.
I've just this month started to check out Stan's solo albums, and I'm hooked. Started with Mosquitos, then got Black Diamond, Snakebite and Anatomy. Stan is a great underdog artist. Just edgy enough to be interesting.
I'm hoping to see him at the Wonder Bar in Asbury Park on March 25:

Been a fan since Wall of Voodoo and got hooked on his solo stuff when he worked with Stewart Copeland on "Don't Box Me In".

When it comes to writing strange tunes about ghostly marines, strippers with broken arms, and “robbers and bandits and bastards and thieves,” songwriter/guitarist Stan Ridgway is an incomparable noir troubadour. Making musical pictures for 30 years now, from his early days with L.A.’s Wall of Voodoo, this sound alchemist has emerged as a singular voice in contemporary song. And he has developed no small number of friends, fans and followers: he’s produced Pixies front man Frank Black, written songs for film with Police drummer Stewart Copeland, shaped soundtracks as well as writing and orchestrating music for the surrealist paintings of Mark Ryden, and both recorded and performed for uber-producer Hal Willner. Truly modern, 21st century folk music, Ridgway’s dark, tall tales often take place in the microcosmic miasma of L.A. and its outer desert, where his characters try to wrest meaning from the beautiful catastrophe of their lives.
As he takes to the road, Ridgway is staging a series of retrospective shows titled “Desert of Dreams” in honor of over 25 years of musical mystery from the House of Ridgway. He’ll be screening his vivid stories starring his classic cast of anti-heroes, dreamers and schemers lost in the darkened drive-in theater of America. The jungle-bound soldier from “Camouflage” (a surprise Top 5 Hit in Europe from Ridgway’s 1986 solo debut The Big Heat), the runaway driver of “King for a Day” (from his most recent offering Snakebite: Blacktop Ballads and Fugitive Songs), and the frustrated outsider in “Don’t Box Me In” (written with Stewart Copeland of the Police for the Francis Ford Coppola film Rumblefish) are but three of Ridgway’s creations that persist, long after the song is over and the curtain has dropped.
Ridgway’s inimitable vocal style carries listeners to the edge of their seats, while perfectly balancing his sometimes-untrustworthy narrator’s voice from the twilight zone. Ridgway is a rare performer and songmaker whose enduring sketches nail the human condition down cold while his characterizations of life remain absolutely fresh and alive.

Wow, thanks for that write-up, Clark. I'm looking forward to the new album.
I'm leaning towards going to the Asbury Park NJ show, but if anyone's interested in the Canal Room (NYC), I can be convinced. I'll be buying a few tix for me and my friends-- I'll post here if I have any extra.

Dang, I waited too long to pick up tickets for the Asbury Park NJ show-- it's sold out. That means I'll be going to the Canal Room NYC tomorrow night. I just picked up some tix. Anyone else for the Canal Room?

Saw Stan tonight. He opened the set solo, and then was joined by a keyboardist and guitarist. He was very good on solo songs (Stan + Guitar/Harmonica) and languid numbers, such as Train of Thought and Lonely Town. Upbeat numbers such as Big Dumb Town didn't have quite the same potency as the studio output. Even so, Stan's voice & playing is great, and it was well worth the trip into NYC.

I've only seen him once 20 years ago.
Overlords is a great song, as well as Lonely Town.
Sadly, no one seems to know of the brilliance
of the Dark Continent album (Thanks, IRS!).
Would love to have a chat with him someday - i've
heard you can always catch him around after his shows.

You could walk right up to him and shake his hand. One guy walked right up to him in front of the stage and handed him a joint at the end of the first set. Stan seemed flabbergasted.
