Never a bad show...ever. Whether it's a run-down gym at Cal State Long Beach or BYOB night at the Lhasa Club or a slick studio filming at SXSW...they've never let me down.

The show at the Bowery in NYC last night was far better than I expected. I've never seen them in concert before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. [I'll start by saying that X is not among my top favorite bands. I respect them, and I own the double-disc Los Angeles / Wild Gift. However, the production of those records are a bit dated. In my opinion, X songs have great verses with killer rhythm guitar riffs, but the choruses don't have great hooks.]

I'm sure glad I had the opportunity to see them live. The X studio recordings seem almost worthless by comparison. John Doe put in an energetic performance-- he was a sweaty, disheveled punk within minutes. <a href="http://www.billyzoom.com/niceguy.html" target="_new">Billy Zoom</a> stood aloof, in wide-stance, his face smiling to the crowd while his guitar blasted out punk chords. Exene sounded, well, like Exene, and DJ Bonebrake pounded the skins in capable support. And despite the distortion and bass notes, each song ended in crisp silence, without even a hint of decay from the cymbal crashes.

The Bowery room was fully packed with people-- a good sign, considering this was their third consecutive night there. X took the stage at around 10:45 and played to about 12:15. John Doe quipped to the audience,"If you go to work tomorrow, you'll be dragging your ass-- your coworkers will notice your lack of productivity. Let them be the productive ones. At least you got to see a fucking punk show."

If you get a chance to see them, you shouldn't pass on the opportunity.
