Saw them on their opening gig at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, CA -- a great show despite lots of technical snafus. As always, they bridged the dead time with hilarious banter. They performed roughly 18 songs (one song from each album) in reverse chronological order and capped it off with a double encore, including a Smashing Pumpkins cover.

Don't miss them if you get a chance. As an added bonus they are giving away a free CD ("Deadman's Hand" EP) and tour program.

So bummed I'll be out of town for the NYC date.

I saw The Church at Center Stage in Atlanta this past Saturday for the final night of their tour. This was the best concert that I've seen in quite some time.

As advertised, The Church played one song per album in reverse chronological order...

A fun night, with songs that I never expected to hear The Church play again. Steve Kilbey and Marty Willson-Piper chatted at length during the gaps and shared several amusing anecdotes about their past, including a late-1980's altercation that they had with opening band, The Mighty Lemon Drops, when The Mighty Lemon Drops ate all of their chocolate backstage.

Haha. Acoustic music usually puts me to sleep as well, so I'd normally agree with you. There are a small number of artists out there that I'd pay to see acoustic performances from and The Church is one such band. They threw enough curveballs at this acoustic show to keep things interesting.

Besides, the acoustic setup was stretched by definition. Aside from Marty's mandolin and 12-string guitar, every instrument was plugged in. Mostly an acoustic sound, but with enough flourish to give it that atmosphere that The Church is known for.
