Shonen Knife 2010 N America tour
Posted: Mon Sep 06, 2010 10:13 amSince I never saw the Ramones play live (and, alas, never will), the closest I will come is last night, when I saw Shonen Knife at the Asia Society. I've never been to a concert at a museum but I certainly appreciated the air conditioning and stadium seating.
Shonen Knife is a 3 women band originally formed in Osaka in 1981. The current line-up has one of the founding members, Naoko Yamano, who plays lead guitar and is the main vocalist. They put on a high energy, 60 minute set, with a variety of musical styles.
Kicked off by the obligatory "Konnichiwa", followed quickly by a ska-like song about a giant South American mouse, a song about pigging out at a barbecue, a Beatle-esque song available free at their website, and a cover version of an actual Beatles (covering the Shirelles) song, "Boys".
A highlight was their totemo kawaii song "Banana Chips"

The set ended with a 10 minute speed metal medley [V]
The encore was a Carpenters cover, "Top of the World"

This gig could usurp The Primitives as the most fun of the year! Seriously thinking about seeing them again at the Knitting Factory in Brooklyn on Tuesday night!
