Teacher strikes

Not that it affects me at all--kids out of high school--but teacher strikes always bugged the crap out of me because no matter what the issue--right or wrong--it's always taken out on the kids and THEY have to make up the time somewhere. Then you read contracts are over in August and need to be renegotiated and the ball starts rolling at the beginning of the school season.

Why not have contracts end June 30? That way--talks start at the BEGINNING of summer and dont ruin the kids year--plus it would put a little more oomph in teachers attemting to come to a deal. After all--they dont want to ruin THEIR summer.

I loved the teacher strike in high school. Off of school from the middle of May until that September....woo hoo! [:D]

I agree, I never could get behind the striking business, as those teachers are basically hurting the very kids they teach ! Makes no sense to me. Also, it doesn't make the teachers look good in the eyes of the community, and does nothing to build trust between them and the parents.

But yeah, it seems to be pretty standard to have contracts end in August, as opposed to may or June. I have no idea why this is. Around here, there haven't been strikes for years, but the contract thing fouls up plenty of stuff for us in other ways. We basically begin the school year with everything up in the air, to be negotiated and haggled over. Ugh ! (don't get me started on those teacher unions.[:(!])
