Vietnam of course...for the Vietnamese. Same can't be said at all for the Iraqis.

Viet Nam of course. But you can bet your ass if young men were being conscripted to go fight in the desert, the Iraq war dissent would rival the domestic battle over Viet Nam.

It is also generational in my opinion. In the sense that what men and women did for our country in World War II (and before) was of such great sacrifice and with a sense of pride and honor and duty for our country. Soldiers who fought in WWII in the Europeand Pacific theaters certainly fought under harsh conditions, many much longer and harsher than what we experience today with technology that does so much for us. Soldiers would battle the Japanese on Guadalcanal and then end up on Iwo Jima. Or consider Normandy. I am only saying that back then, the sense of duty and serving our country was much greater than it is today.

So today, yes, I agree there would be much backlash to draft soldiers into war. This generations, in general, does not have nearly the allegiance to their country that older generations have. Today it is more of a what the country owes me mindset. This is seen across many issues. Sad, but the honor, pride and devotion to country that this country once had is sadly lacking. I don't believe it is because of politics, since this is always an issue and the country always goes thru periods of ups and downs, just look at our storied history for such a young country. I am a veteran with an absolute belief in my country and am proud to be an american. I certainly disagree with many things, but at the end of the day I am an american and have faith in our country emerging from internal strife and difficult times, we always have emerged better and stronger.

Sadly, we will always lose men and women in conflicts/wars. Vietnam was around 57,000 killed (about 10 times more than Iraq), while WWII was in the hundreds of thousands. Not saying they did not occur, but in spite of the losses, people in the country were very patriotic and you don't read about much protest going on, thought it was there as it always will be. Just now, the sense of patriotism is lacking sorely. It's a me, me, me generation.
