It's the dead of winter, so what could be a better time for a tropical drink? Here's a very mainstream rum cocktail. It's easy to make and will bombard your brain cells mercifully.
The recipe is well documented <a href="http://www.kaiserpenguin.com/painkiller/" target="_new">here</a>.
Painkiller
4 oz Pineapple juice
1 oz Orange juice
1 oz Cream of coconut (i.e., Coco Lopez)
4 oz Pusser's Navy Rum*
8 oz crushed ice
Sprinkle some nutmeg on top. Seriously.
*Notes: Ok, Pusser's is probably my least favorite rum of all-time. It has a huge amount flavor, but it's a sour flavor that I find repellent-- and I don't say that about many rums. I think Pusser's is still around because it allegedly preserves the 300 year old British Navy recipe. Here are some alternatives that I use with no apology to the brits:
Appleton's VX ($22) - a far better navy-style rum
Gosling's Black Seal ($22) - nice flavor, good mixer
Bacardi 8 year ($24) - the only bat from bacardi worth imbibing
Mt. Gay Eclipse ($22) - slightly boring but decent all around rum
Mixing a blend of rums is highly recommended for this. Finally, since this is a fruity drink, it is incumbent on you to put that to good use. There is no reason not to elevate the meds on this drink and float a little shot of rum on top. Cruzan Coconut rum would fit the bill nicely here (and everyone should keep some coconut rum in stock, really). If you want to spoil yourself, a floater of Pyrat XO would be killer indeed.
Overdose Warning: Adding a little Cointreau and a squeeze of lime will transform this drink into the deadly Goombay Smash.
