Generally people love to celebrate the anniversary of anything but the 100th anniversary of the animated cartoon came and went in 2006 with barely a mention. The modern day cartoon was born from the "lightning sketch" film, wherein an artist would draw on a blackboard and the film would be sped up. In 1906 J. Stuart Blackton had the bright idea of only filming the progression of the drawing and not including any any footage of his own hand at work.
