Not surprising given his struggles the past few years, but still shitty news. [:(]
He was a true innovator and criminally under appreciated. Hopefully, at the very least, his death will inspire a few people who are in the dark about his work to check it out.

An original. Wasn't my thing but influenced so many others who were my thing. Very punk in a way. It's hard to think of somebody like Mark E Smith existing without Captain Beefheart.

Thanks Schwenko, I've never seen that video. I think the actual song "Bat Chain Puller" starts around the 3:20 mark. 'Shiny Beast/Bat Chain Puller' and 'Lick My Decals Off Baby' are my favorite Beefheart albums.
Here's another video-- an uncharacteristically straight slab of soul from "Safe as Milk":
