Just curious,
I've seen them used in many discussion forums, can they be applied to our forum ID?
The emoticons are cute but just aren't enough sometimes IMHO.

Good suggestion ... I'll look into it. I believe there are a few Avatar mods out there for this forum.

Avatars do add some character to forums, however I would point out that they would also tend to slow the page load times. For those of us on broadband, this is not much of an issue, but for those using dial-up it could be a real drag. If you opt for adding avatars, I would definitely suggest keeping the size limits down.

There are also tons of other smilies available. I'm particularly fond of the animated ones. <img src="http://home.comcast.net/~fritzb1/stooges.gif">

I was wondering about the bandwith issue myself but isn't that more of a concern for the host server rather than for the forum users? [?]

How 'bout some 'South Park' inspired Avatars?

C'mon Philly who would you create?

Sorry to bring this old thread back up. (I searched before I posted, what a concept!) Any word Mike on an Avatar mod that would allow us to have a small picture or image under our name?[:)]

Given Mike P's Hosting svc's track record, he'll probably want to wait until making a switch before implementing an avatar mod.
Se necessita mucho bandwidth mang <IMG SRC="http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v395/richp62/Icons%20Avatars/image042.gif">

The worst offender I saw was the old forums for x-entertainment.com. You see, you could have as long of a signature as you want, and coudln't turn it off in prefs. YOu could put images in it. This was frequently abused as there was a significant # of multi-image sigs, and large-image sigs. Combine that with a small default font for messages, and you got 90% sig lines, 10% written content.

I'd say go with vbulletin. The post-data weirdness gets to me, and the last visit date is numerous days behind what it really is.

I'm gonna be an old man. Avatars are nice to look at, but they're superfluous, what with the already existng stars and Room at the Top, etc. tags. Perhpas, instead, we could have an avatar on our member's page only?

Unless the avatar is an actual moving picture of the person posting... I don't wanna see it.
[/quote]I vote for annoying. I'm more interested in what people have to say rather than what silly icon they can attach to their message. Our cornucopia of colorized emoticons is more than enough.[8D]

Add my name to those against avatars. We'll be buried in piles of crap we just don't need to see like children, pets, etc. They're just too cutesy. We don't need them. Although I have an insanely nasty eel-related pic if we do get them so I guess it may be cool afterall. [:D]

I vote no. I've seen boards with truly disturbing & violent stuff passed off by someone who thinks it's edgy or funny.
I know most of us wouldn't do that - but there are the occasional trolls.
I like that you can come here & read & not see the same little animated pics & crap over & over with each post.
