Yankees vs. Redsox

Is there anything better in baseball than a game at Fenway??? And even more so, an evening game in October, which can only mean playoffs or world series, that Fenway evening chill of October where it is definitely a jacket night but the place is on fire??? The place is flooded with the faithful, Beantown is buzzing, the bars are stuffed, everywhere you go is sox mania. All season long game days are this way really, but come fall, and come world series time, I don;t care, there is no place else on earth like Fenway!!

I hope you guys don't see me as evil when saying this but I kind of like the curse, because it is all we know. The "Bambino" curse is a tradition of Americana, with out it we would loose a since of order and universal balance. The curse gives a since a cultural stability and normalcy. With the curse Yankee fans are still Yankee fans obnoxious as hell, Redsox fans are still downtrodden and west coast fans are still indifferent. If we loose the curse society may loose a since of balance and many may panic that the end of the world is drawing near.

Well, I'll be the counter-argument here. The Curse is annoying fiction made up and promoted by Dan Shaughnessy about 25 years ago to promote a book.

Why would there be a curse from Babe Ruth? I'm sure he was eternally grateful he was traded, it was certainly the best thing that ever happened for his career and baseball in general. If anything, it should be the Curse of Harry Frazee, the numbskull who sold him in order to finance a Broadway play.

I hope the Sox win the Series so that no one ever mentions the f*^%ing Curse ever again. That and there are untold numbers of old people the deserve to see it once in their lifetime. One of my grandfathers lived his life and died without ever seeing it, the other is 80. I want the Sox to win it for him.

Sorry, jr, I don't want to seem like I'm jumping down your throat on this one, just my perspective.

Now if the Red Sox and Cubs were to meet in the Series, there are only two possible outcomes:
1. Game Seven never ends
2. Armageddon - be it nuclear, aliens, the gods of your choice, whatever.

I too want the Sox to win it all, for all the lifelong devoted fans who never give up, yes, they get pissed, but they love their team, and for baseball it would be good. I don;t believe in a curse, as most bosox fans don't either. It just adds to the drama and hype through the years.

But, whether the Red Sox win it all, or lose another heartbreaker like in '86, or another nailbiting great series like in '75, or the 7 game loss to S.Louis in '67, I will stand by my team no matter what. They are and always will be my only team that matters in any form.

As for the '75 World Series, another 7-games loss, this one to The Big Red Machine from Cinci, there were no losers, I think Cinci fans, while wanting their team to win, fell for the sox also. It was perhaps one of the greatest world series ever - who can forget Carlton Fisk jumping up and down, waving those arms to keep that home run fair??? Or in '67, my man Yaz signing autographs for any and every kid that wnated one, and being his usual gracious self - for me, my ultimate all time favorite player.

The Bosox get really hot at the right time, defete the Yankees and prevent them from going into the playoffs, and cool down in the post season and are elininated by the Oakland A's in the ALCS, and the balenced in the universe is still preserved. Yankee fans are slightly humbled [B)], Redsox fans are less downtrodden, and west coast fans are still indifferent even after one of thier own plays in the fall classic [8)]

Maybe George should call Arizona Diamondbacks or Florida Marlins owners and ask how you can win it all without $100 million dollars per player; when Florida can beat the Yankees in the world series with a combined payroll less than the single payroll of some of the Yankee players, that should tell Steinbrenner something, but I guess he thinks $$$ can buy a title; not always, George.

Here it is less than 24 hours and the most important series of the year will begin for both teams at Yankee Stadium Will Boston close the gap and move ever closer in exorcising the ghost/curse of the Babe and Bill Buckner or will the Yankees assert thier peranial domonation of the Bosox? This could be the year that the anual autum tradition of Bosox dissapointment and downtroddingness(sp?) comes to a historic end. Tune in as this season escatologically unfolds to a thrilling and posibly historic conclusion.
