Why are record companies rewarding downloaders with bonus tracks and not including them with the cd's? I really think they are going about this all wrong. They should put bonus tracks as special tracks on cd's as exclusives so if you buy the physical product, you get rewarded. It seems these days they want to reward the people that are downloading instead. Isn't it more to their benefit if people buy the cd's?

Possibly because of DRM?

I'm guessing it costs ZERO for the download and an amount greater than zero to include it on the CD. I didn't even realize there are record companies anymore.

FYI that BSP have not unexpectedly done it right by including the bonus on their new physical EP vs the online one. So perhaps not a universal practice...or maybe only anachronistic bands do what anachronistic fans expect.

Perhaps they want to push people to buy digital downloads. It's cheaper for them, and risk-free (since they don't get stuck with non-selling copies).

It's like back in the old days, when they wanted to push CDs over vinyl/cassette. They still had to make CDs, but it was cheaper than vinyl or cassettes, and they could charge more.

I agree with obs. But I would like to add one more thing: nowadays iTunes and amazon as leading online stores are simply too powerful and thus can easily demand a bonus from record companies. And since I believe in a physical product rather than a download I feel betrayed because of those downloadable extras.

I could even live with online extras as long as they are downloadable indiviadually without being forced to buy the entire album again.

Record companies are really difficult to understand: in a certain way they mightily tried to minimize sales by dropping formats (singles, vinyl) and handing over all power to download platforms like amazon and iTunes. Had those stupid major record companies teamed up for a common download platform about five to ten years ago they still could keep everything under control. But I'm getting too off topic...

Kind of like "Get Set" from Yazoo. The only way you can get that is if you pay $15 for the full download of the album. Just to be fair, they should at least provide you with a code or something to enter if you buy the actual cd. [}:)]

This is why I will buy cds and look online for the bonus tracks on a free basis. Sorry, but I want to own the cd, and if I have to, I will try to get the bonus for free.
