When they were Elkland they mined an Erasure sound-a-like vibe.

They've since lost a member over the summer.

By all measures I know I should like these darlings of the indie blogosphere the same way all of you do. I've made several attempts to listen to the Drums, thinking maybe I wasn't in the right mood for their music each time I listened.

But after watching the latest video for Me and the Moon, I give up. The only reaction these guys evoke in me is a big yawn. I just don't get it.

And as far as their "videos" go, why bother? Bad haircuts. Lame clothes. Shit, I can dance better and that's not saying much. The lead singer struts around like he's lost his anal beads up his ass.

I know we all have our own musical tastes but it is fascinating trying to understand my opposite reaction compared to a group of people with whom I usually have a common view. There must be a research grant available out there somewhere.

Some of their stuff grabs me and some other is like, meh.... The mesmerizing thing about the lead singer's dancing is that, although you COULD dance like that, would you actually do it in public?

Agreed actually. To me, it's one of the most ungrabby albums I've ever heard from a band that is actually pretty grabby live. It's just a big mushod ball of indescript I-don't-know-what.

For me, the appeal is that they're just so non-mainstream. That's probably not saying much on a surface level but in the context of our alternative music board I find that they're non-mainstream even to the indie / alternative stream. Maybe that says it a little better. I just love the disregard for any cliche, their non-conformity. So what if it's a little dorky? It's an ownable attribute and shows a total confidence in what they do. I find that pretty admirable, as challenging as they can be. Whatever drives them to be this way, I don't know but I say keep going.

I think there's a lot of truth to that Marv, and it really really comes out live. You start by scratching your head, going" WTF?" then on to "Hey, this is weirdly cool." But musically, the album just has no stickiness to it for me.

djcraig, blucher, marv - I appreciate your points of view! I thought I was being (more of) a cunt (than usual).

I do wonder though, marv, when the Drums are being touted on every "alternative" or "indie" blog out there, doesn't that somehow make them indie mainstream? And when one of my out of touch corporate co-workers asks me if I like the Drums, it clinches it for me.

How about Albin Larslin and the Bad Dressed Arctic Explorers? Now that's some cool indie shit.
