Which bands did lose their compasses this year!
First three that come to my mind:

GREAT topic and super relevant this year it seems to me. I've kept a mini log of impressions of albums I've heard in detail this year. I'll jot down a 1-10 rating where the highs I know are good and the lows I know are shit - I don't have to rethink those. There's a TON of stuff I put the middle though from arguably decent bands. Some of those I've raised after relistening or dropped as well. These are some of my notable slide-out-the-back-of-the-truck ones...
Arcade fire 4
The gaslight anthem 5
Goldfrapp 4
Interpol 4
jj 4
Kissaway trail 6
MGMT 5
The national 3
The new pornographers 5
These new puritans 4
Ra ra riot 5
Scissor sisters 5
We are scientists 3
!!! 6
Excludes stuff I've always thought of as drek of course, many notably falling into that Vampire Weekend milieu like Best Coast, etc.

Two of my favorite tracks of the year "Suburban War" and "We Used to Wait" came off of The Suburbs. They could have release a decent 5 track EP, but 16 tracks??? with not nearly enough stand outs.

Interpol was a huge disappointment - especially after a lot of the hype. I can't disagree with any of Frau's assessments.

This entire year has been a wash as far as I'm concerned. I've heard a few decent songs here and there but nothing that blew me away. I'm also getting a little sick of the Indie formula:
Bearded dudes in Williamsburg make something that sounds a little bit like early PIL, the hipster blogs hyperventilate about it, Pitchfork gives the album 5 stars lest they be seen as not being on top of things, record comes out, it sucks except for that one download we all got on RCRDLBL, dudes do the festival circuit, get a song in an iPod commercial, put out "challenging" second album i.e. they shot their wad on the first one and ran out of ideas, Rolling Stone gives it 5 starts because they missed out on recognizing the hype behind the first album, Pitchfork senses the wind changing directions and slams them and alters their original 5 star review to 3 stars lest they be seen as not being on top of things, and then the next act comes along...and on...and on....and on....
