Volume 200: Progressive Rock

Again a Progressive Rock Volume. This time with mainly the dinosaurs of the seventies, who made a remarkable comeback in the eighties, after the punk wave of the late seventies early eighties, mainly by re-invented themselves. Besides that it features tracks from the new line-up of Marillion and their ex-vocalist. Also the eighties meant the start of the supergroups, bands which featured members who already tasted the success in former well-known groups.

Marillion – The King Of Sunset Town
Fish – Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors

After the Clutching At Straws tour of 1987/88 Marillion started writing again for the follow-up album. But differences between the band and vocalist Fish resulted in a split. The period that followed can be considered as very interested, since songs both worked on during that period resurfaced in one or another form on the seperate albums following this split. Marillion consolidated success with the new vocalist Steve Hogarth (ex How We Live, ex Europeans) on Seasons End, while Fish debuted as solo artist on Vigil In A Wilderness Of Mirrors.

Asia – Open Your Eyes

A so-called supergroup formed in the early eighties by John Wetton (ex King Crimson, ex Roxy Music, ex UK), Steve Howe (ex Yes), Geoffrey Downes (ex Buggles, ex Yes) and Carl Palmer (ex ELP). The group had a hit with Heat Of The Moment. Until late into the nineties the album titles always started with an A.

Saga – Wind Him Up

Saga are a Canadian rock band from Oakville, Ontario. Jim Crichton and Welsh-born vocalist Michael Sadler were the principal songwriters. Saga had numerous line-up changes over the years. Ian and Jim Crichton were the only two original members who appeared on every album. Jim Crichton left the band in 2018. Sadler appeared on every release, apart from the 2009 album The Human Condition. Keyboardist Jim Gilmour was with the band from 1979, making his debut on the album Silent Knight. Drummer Steve Negus performed with Saga until 2003. Both Gilmour and Negus left the band in 1986 and came back in 1992. The lineup was supplemented by many session musicians and live performers from the late 1980s to the late 2000s. Saga have been awarded gold and platinum albums worldwide and have sold more than eight million albums.

Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe – Birthright
Yes – Leave It
Chris Squire & Alan White – Run With The Fox

Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe was a so-called supergroup, although all four were members of Yes during the seventies. Bruford was the first leaving Yes in 1972. Wakeman and Anderson left in 1980 and Howe was the last leaving in 1981. Although Anderson was back in Yes from 1983 to 1987, ABWH debuted in 1989 with their self-titled album and a huge world tour under the name of An Evening Of Yes Music And More. The next year during the recording of the next ABWH album they came in touch with the other four members (Squire, Rabin, White and Kaye) of Yes which resulted in the 1991 album Union and a worldwide tour again with all eight members on a round stage.

In 1980 after the departure of Jon Anderson and Rick Wakeman, Trevor Horn and Geoff Downes (both from The Buggles) were recruited for the Drama album and the follow-up worldwide tour. After this tour Yes fell apart. The residual members, Squire and White, started writing material, which led to the single Run With The Fox. Then they met the South African guitarist Trevor Rabin who presented his demos to the duo. Soon the trio were back in the studio and when Tony Kay and Jon Anderson joined, Yes got back and had a worldwide hit with Owner Of A Lonely Heart and a successful album 90125 btw produced by Trevor Horn.

Genesis – Tonight, Tonight, Tonight (edited version)

By 1978, with the leaving of Steve Hackett, Genesis re-invented themself. The band started writing simpler, direct and later on more commercial, songs and worked as a trio on the composing and writing side. This also brought the commercial and chart success of Genesis.

Eloy – Fools

German progressive rock band formed in Hannover in 1969. They took their name from H.G. Wells' "The Time Machine", and sci-fi elements feature in much of their music, particularly the mid-to-late 1970's concept albums.
In their early days Eloy played a heavy rock, at first influenced by British bands like Deep Purple or Uriah Heep, and then increasingly took on influences from Pink Floyd, mixed in with what became the distinctive Eloy sound.
Eloy (due to many line-up changes) became the project of front man Frank Bornemann, and basically four different bands during their history. Eloy went on to be one of the most internationally successful of German progressive rock bands born out of the Krautrock era.

Rush – Manhattan Project

The progressive power trio from Canada. This one comes from their commercial successful album Power Windows. The band retired in 2015 after their R40 tour. 3 – Talkin‘ Bout
Emerson, Lake & Powell – Touch And Go

In 1979 Emerson, Lake & Palmer went on an hiatus that would take twelve years. But during the eighties Greg Lake and Keith Emerson were involved in several side projects, released new material and mainly toured the USA. The first trio was Emerson, Lake & Powell who released their self-titled album in 1986. In 1988 the band 3 followed with members Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Robert Berry. Both projects/bands only released one album. In 2018 Robert Berry revived 3 as 3.2. The first album The Rules Have Changed was partly written together with Keith Emerson, who died in 2016. Sofar 2 albums have been released.

King Crimson – Three Is A Perfect Pair
Andy Summer & Robert Fripp – I Advanced Masked

King Crimson was the brainchild of Robert Fripp and the first official rehearsal took place in January 1969. After several line-up changes, including members like Greg Lake, John Wetton and Bill Bruford the band split in 1974. After a hiatus of 7 years Robert Fripp returned with a new line-up which was active until 1984. Ten years later King Crimson reformed again and after then there have been several reincarnations of the band.
After 1984 Robert Fripp went his own way. Married Toyah, started The League Of Gentlemen, later The League Of Crafty Guitarists, and worked with Andy Summers and Toyah throughout the eighties.

Jethro Tull – Lap Of Luxury

Jethro Tull was formed in 1967-1968. The group's music is marked by the distinctive vocal style and lead flute work of front man Ian Anderson.
