Yello - Non-Album Songs

This unofficial collection has been around for over a decade. Since it
was compiled from various sources, you can expect some issues. The
biggest problem is that many/most of the tracks have been upsampled
from lossy sources as per Lossless Audio Checker. Anyhoo, here are the
files as I found them, warts and all.

It's a shame that more than 16 songs in this compilation are 128 kbps mp3s. Even some are hard to get in lossless versions like "Topaz (Insect Mix)" that includes the sound at the end of the track, the extended version of "Andy" or the X-Press2's 7th Movement Mix of "I Want You Back".

Just checked them for you, these tracks are all upscaled:
CD 01: 1-02, 1-03, 1-04, 1-05, 1-08, 1-09, 1-10, 1-11, 1-12, 1-13, 1-14, 1-16, 1-20
CD-02: 2-02, 2-04, 2-05, 2-07, 2-08, 2-09, 2-10, 2-11, 2-12, 2-13, 2-14, 2-16, 2-17, 2-18

Anyway, thanks for the upload.

Those automatic checkers are mainly looking for a dearth of frequency content above 16 kHz, but it's normal for some songs to just be recorded without much up there to begin with. In a hi-res spectrogram it's easy to see the difference (for MP3 you're also looking for 29-millisecond "specks & holes", not just a cutoff). I use Adobe Audition which is IMHO has gold standard of spectrograms, very fast and tweakable. So here are some corrections to the list based on my observations:

• 1-07 (I.T. Splash) is a combination from 2 sources. The first 2:02 is lossless, the remainder (starting with the maniacal laugh) is from MP3.
• 1-10 (Smirak's Train) is lossless.
• 1-11 (Thrill Wave) is lossless.
• 2-15 (A New Culture Is Born) is from MP3 but has been further processed to add hiss and harmonic distortion (possibly by recording it to cassette and playing it back).

Guys, thank you very much, most interesting. Nice to see not all of it is mp3-derived, though the scale of faultiness is somewhat unexpected.
