Here's a rip of the Y Records version of Shriekback's second album, Jam Science. This version of the album was released without the band's approval and contains rough versions of most of the songs that would appear on the official Arista release. There's also a couple of songs not found on the Arista version, "International" and "Putting On the Pressure". This record was cleaned in a Record Doctor V RCM and ripped using my SL-1200MK2 with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML cartridge. Enjoy!

I prefer the Y Records mixes to the Arista re-recorded/remixed versions, although it's still pretty great either way.

Interesting story! How did it ever come out if the band weren't happy? Crazy times! Will have to give it a listen, Shriekback are always an intriguing proposition

From what I've seen, Y Records was failing at the time so the label released this "unfinished" version (bypassing the band in the process) to try to recoup some of the costs. According to this, the band seemed annoyed by it but let it slide since they were busy finishing what would be the Arista version.

Interesting sleeve notes. Calling the Y version "unmixed" is a bit disingenuous. Clearly it was not all recorded live, straight to stereo; it was in fact mixed from multitrack recordings and contains added reverb and stereo placement ... just hastily done, perhaps, and not up to the band's standards. In my opinion, it's all better than demo quality, but I can see how the Arista sound was much more in the polished direction they were wanting to go.
