I wonder, "for promo use only" means only for radio broadcast and promo ads use? using the record in, say, discotheque, or any other public activity not related to direct sales, was forbidden under that license??

with old vinyl 'promotional use' only pressings were those which were circulated to radio stations prior to general release. Not necessarily the same as the commercial release so for example with The Police you would get a mono and stereo version, radio edits, slightly longer mixes (wotm) which is what I referred to in the other thread where the police box set was mentioned.
apf? southern boy? borntorun99? yazoost? Fucking joke? Definitely.

When record labels pressed X number of product (vinyl/CD/Cassette), the artist and anyone else with "points" on the record would get a percentage of the sales. Setting aside versions marked "For Promo Use Only" (often including unique versions) were meant for radio stations, DJ's, journalists, etc. and were not counted towards the royalties that the artists would receive. Artists were expected to give up a certain amount of product earmarked for publicity purposes.

Also -- technically -- "For Promo Use Only" means "not for commercial sale." There was a time some labels would fine second hand stores if they found them selling these.

I visited CD stores almost daily when I was in college. Most of the Promo CDs were free.
