Need help on the External Drive ,please

OK, I bought a Western Digital "External Drive USB Hard Drive" (dual-option backup USB 2.0)

Now I'm not sure if this is what I need/want. I want to add memory & move all the MP3's off my C-Drive onto this thing.

Everything in the instructions & prompts seems to deal with "backup" & after installing this......now it's asking for me to insert a disc (it said "no media").

Doesn't the external drive going to actually hold the MP'S are did I just screw up & buy the wrong damn thing.

I threw a disc in my modem & it say it will take 11 hours to copy the 40Gib

Ahhhh, just as I'm typing, the CD kicked out..it copied 116 files onto it. This sounds like backup to me. Not what I want.

Here's what I bought... http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 3467859961

Any ideas?

Just don't use the one-touch backup features. If you're on PC, it should appear in your My Computers" disk list. Just drag and drop your files on there. You may also want to make note of whether the disk has been formatted in Fat32 or NTFS. Windows doesn'

xtc,

Memory is not what you need or bought. You don't need memory.
You need hard drive space which is what you bought.
Follow the directions and have patience and you'll figure it out.

I wouldn't use the backup option either. Copy & paste or drag & drop it to your exteral hd folder. I doubt they would have formatted your drive different then what all XP users use. Let us know what version of Windows you have too just for curiosity sa

Wow....thanks for your imput guys. Eka...you were right. Once I took a breath and calmed down I went back in & decided to start from scratch.

Ok, here's where I am. I re-formatted to the NTFS like you suggested Blir.

Long-story short, after doing t

XTC, the song ID tags don't reside in WMP. They're now actually in your songs, so any player from any source disk should be able to access them. You should just be able to "Add Media to Library" and add the new destination folder. You may want to delete t

Did anybody think to mention about 'Mirroring' the drive? (ex: using Ghost)
Perhaps that would be a better use of an external USB HDD (given that it is at least as big as the resident HDD. (just my $.02)

Do I want to delete all my songs off of the C-drive & just keep them on the F-drive? And if I do that, will that affect how they are stored in in my Windows Media Player (seems to me I had problems a few months ago when I changed the "destination source"

What I was afaid of...just happened. I went to Windows Explorer, then C-Drive, then My Music....it brings up all the folders of the bands that I've stored
