New so8os Artist Editions on the way

Postby audiodile » Wed Oct 31, 2012 8:12 am

This is an honest question....

Are the So 80s collections geared more toward a UK/European audience? It seems like some of the bands they've done so far were not as successful in the US, with the exception of Culture Club and Billy Idol. There are a number of fairly major artists whose hits all had remixes and as of yet do not have any sort of compilation.

Or is it really just a matter of whose catalog is cheaper to get the rights to? Specifically, I'm wondering about Peter Gabriel, Eurythmics, Dead or Alive, Art of Noise's China years, INXS, Simple Minds, Yes, etc..

The series started out well with the likes of OMD,Heaven 17 and Ultravox. There was also a Spandau Ballet one scheduled for release but hell knows what happened to that. Going by recent releases i wouldn't say they were aimed at the UK market as i had never heard of Hubert Kah or Sandra before and Falco was like a two hit wonder in the UK. That Rock Me Amadeus crap was just as annoying as Agadoo by Black Lace if not even more so.

IF one wanted a good Falco primer/comp, would the recent Ultimate Falco single disc be the one?

I'm not really a big fan - I've only heard of Der Kommissar, Rock Me Amadeus, Vienna Calling, Jeany - and I lived in Europe (incl. Germany) for a number of years.

So which of the numerous comps is the gateway?

Good thing is that the bonus tracks on Falco 3 25th anniversary Deluxe Edition (2010) are mostly unique in regard to this so80s collection. I think the only 'shared' one is Urban Tropical (Extended Version).

Surely yes - Blank & Jones are German djs + their label is based in Germany. The stuff should sell in Germany + hopefully other countries as well. Hubert Kah was big in Germany as were Sandra and Falco.
I think it is safe to say, if bands didn't have many hits in Germany (+ Europe), it is very unlikely they will appear on the so80s artist series.
