FGTH - SexMix : Archive Tapes Vol 1 (2-CD)

Postby Luke » Tue Jul 10, 2012 1:43 am

The "apology" isn't any such thing is it? it's obvious Peel doesn't give a shit but is annoyed that the cock up was made public BEFORE the cd got to the shops.

And the solution? a possible free download at some unspecified point in the future if a decent master can be found?
What's the problem in finding a good master? and what about those of us that don't download?

The correct action would to have delayed the release, repressed CD 1.
Simple. And why isn't Peel held to account? He gets away with everything, he should be replaced, and the quality control people too, what they do, or do not do, is a complete joke.

The fans are reacting in the best way by cancelling their amazon orders and saying so on Facebook, that has to be noticed by someone other than Peel, someone who gives a damn.

What bugs me is that some people are saying they will still buy it and
are saying the same old things; 'everyone makes a mistake', 'this is better than nothing', 'what do you expect for the price?' etc. etc. etc.

I wonder what the band members, or Trevor Horn or anyone else originally involved would think if they knew this was how the fans are treated? And that whole so called download "solution" is an insult too.

I eagerly wait for the next mess up, wonder what it will be?
As long as Peel and co. and in charge of the element series fans will continue to be fucked over, and will never get what we want.

Look at the Propaganda entries in the element series. Where is "Complete Machinery"? one of Peels priorities should have been
to get that and "Do Well" on CD, preferably on the "Secret Wish" reissue, and where are the videos that should accompany all ZTT releases? Imagine "Love And A Million Other Things", or "Laughter, Tears And Rage" issued with an extra disc of the videos? they would have been real deluxe collectors sets.

No thought at all goes in the element range, as I said before, Peel works in a vacuum with no idea what the fans want, because he won't communicate with us, so how does that make him suited to the job?

Have Fun.

Why would there even be a mono master? That makes no sense!

and thats the odd thing that seems to being missed here - its not the cassingle master, its a bloody different version. ZTT do not know arse from elbow and i have said before, we'll all be dead before they actually release what we want!

It sounds like some cut and paste job that somebody has done on their computer and fucked up. I will be surprised if ZTT don't do something soon regarding this as there has been a hell of an uproar with people planning to boycott this release and i don't think even if the master is found a wave file will suffice even if it is free.

More than likely the source was stereo, but in an attempt to make something new out of old tapes, the final rendering was done in mono and overlooked by someone with little experience.

Because they are probably making up mixes and mix titles as they go along now and got it mixed up with the real one from the cassette.

I guess it would not be odd at all if some of these mixes do not actually exist in there archives and they are just making things up now, … or even better for them, … in a couple of months they come out with another exclusive release that you have to spend $$ on.

You are probably correct about the mixing done on a pc. When you run out of the real genuine material from the archives and you want to keep selling product, you have to create the illusion that more material has been recently discovered by editing some old material into several new (so called archive) versions.

I would not worry about it ......... in a couple of months from now they will come out with a remastered version of the f##ked up version. [:D]

=======================================

If I had to fathom a guess and personal observation, this label has a limited amount of back-catalog materials in its archives. When you get down to it they did not have that many different artists signed up to the label to begin with, and rely heavily on selling the same material over and over and over again to the point were they are selling recently made edits.

What you might be seeing is, … Many years ago when some genuine and unintentional mistakes were made titling mixes, going back to the days of the original vinyl releases. They stumbled upon a formula for selling stuff to devoted fans of a particular artist or group by perpetually releasing material with mistakes, incorrect versions or made up versions with the (hope) and promise that the next release would be better and / or the correct one.

I think it’s catching up with them now. There is only so many ways you can take the same songs and put new names (exotic titles) on them. Or put out releases with obvious mistakes before people start to say f##k-it.

From the HMV website, in the sexmix listing :

July 2012
The first five tracks included on the 'Sex Mix' release have been mastered in mono as these were the only master tapes available & no stereo versions have been located. ZTT felt it would be better to have these tracks on the collection in this form rather than not including them at all.

And the first review there:
Beware - First Five Tracks are in MONO!!!

13 July, 2012
If you're a Frankie nutter and are looking for some stuff that's not been released on CD before, then at 7 this is worth a punt. But the first five tracks have been mismastered in MONO. The choice is yours...

This shows that despite all the outrage from fans, the release is going ahead as planned.

Luke... No surprise there TBH. Magnum-Truth, if what you are saying is right, it's very worrying. I can only hope and pray that you are wrong!

Going by the info at the HMV website, presumably posted by ZTT, (going by the wording) that the release is going ahead with no changes made, despite fan concerns about the mono issue.

"The first five tracks included on the 'Sex Mix' release have been mastered in mono as these were the only master tapes available & no stereo versions have been located. ZTT felt it would be better to have these tracks on the collection in this form rather than not including them at all."

This really upsets me. I have pre-ordered this because I was hoping for a "phenomenal" release. I do like the ZTT element series, however, this is just a sad and pathetic case. What am I to do? I don't have everything Frankie released, so I was hoping to "catch up" with this compilation. I'm afraid that if I do buy this along with others, that this sets a "standard" for mediocrity for all future releases and other labels as well. Oh, I guess on Volume 2, they'll fix the problem. Hey, I'd rather wait for Ben Liebrand to release these mixes properly. You can always count on Mr. Liebrand. I am so furious and depressed. The people responsible for this should be PUNISHED to the highest degree possible. And what about Trevor Horn and the band!?! What's their opinion? This almost ruins their legacy and commitment to quality. A dirty shame.

I'll add my two cents, the remaster (yes I have had this for three weeks now) is bollocks - very very muddy - the mono stuff is shameful and some parts sound like it has been recorded in a kitchen sink.

It's a sad sight to hear and i wished it would of been better. At least I still have my cassingle ripped lovingly....
