Thanks AM. So the 'original' extended mix is really just a simple edit or extention of the 7" mix rather than a proper mix/remix.

In 1980 so called 12" Mixes were unusual outside the realm of disco and reggae. What happened IF a single was very successful, sometimes they would just cut abd paste the original 7 inch tape, just like Mr Analogue pointed out. The first "real" 12" Mixes in Pop typically came in 1981.

Yep. Actually, the original English and Spanish 12" singles feature the 7" mix and not the extended. I think that in 1980 the extended versions were just beginning to be popular and the song was being such a success that they decided to make that longer cut'n'paste edit for the german 12"... The 'real' remix by John Luongo came some months later in 1981.

The term "mix" is used to mean "version" by lots of people. But "mix" denotes that it SOUNDS differently, whereas an "edit" sounds the same, but differs in duration. Thus, a short single version is "version", and the longer 12" version in Germany is "12 inch version" or "extended". The 1981 12", thus, is a "remix". And a very good one at that. There should really be a proper Extended Visage 2-CD.....

discoginfo, yes and no. I get your point, but mix and version are used by the industry and artists at free will and don't necessarily meet your interpretation. And some shorter or longer 'edits' aren't just such either. Unfortunately for us decades have passed using these terms without getting into deep, strict considerations when naming songs, so we still will encounter problems when identifying mixes, edits, versions or re-recordings...

It seems rather strange that Visage didn't make a real "extended version/mix" of "Fade to Grey" as Spandau put out a really good 12" versions of "To Cut a Long Story Short" straight away in November 1980... Maybe they just weren't paid for it by the record company as it didn't anticipate a hit (and Midge writes in his autobiog what a shock it was to see it climb in the Top-20 in Jan' 81).

That German 12" sounds like something the record company would do, not the band, as it's just too simple(minded) for their standards. Not an uncommon practice in the day, by the way.

As for the US/Luongo extended version of "FTG", to complicate matters even further, I've seen various compilations that contain it edited to 6.24 or even 5.36 time marks. Just a curio, of course, but for a completist!..[:D]
