Featuring the future Dread Zeppelin in Gary Putman and Severs Ramsey, the Prime Movers navigated in the charcoal waters of the post-punk movement, adopting the Big Guitar wallop of U2 and the existential angst of the Sound for a less commercial approach than their peers.
Just as New Wave and post-punk are enjoying a revival with successful young acts like the Killers and Interpol, Birdcage Records has reissued the Prime Movers' 1984 debut, "Museum," on CD with five bonus tracks.
Originally signed to Island Records in 1986, the Los Angeles-based band toured with Big Country and Thomas Dolby, acquiring substantial airplay in the U.K. Although relatively ignored in their native America, the Prime Movers were included on the soundtrack of Michael Mann's thriller "Manhunter."
The group virtually disappeared in 1988. A year later, Putman and Ramsey formed Dread Zeppelin with their friends as a joke and ironically became immediate MTV stars.
Putman and Ramsey are currently working on a new Prime Movers album with new drummer Gary Falasco.
