On May 20th,the coming of age "new wave" comedy SQUARE PEGS finally
got it's dvd release.
It is the complete series & is just plain fun to watch,if not just
for the new wave soundtrack of the time, the theme song by the Waitresses or the cool cameo of Devo.
It's a shame that Merritt Butrick is no longer with us.

Yes, it's great to have the complete restored episodes as well as the amazing new (and lenghty) interviews but so far I'm finding that the cool background New Wave tracks have been replaced by generic crap. First episode: 52 Girls from the cafeteria scene, Private Idaho from Johnny's headphones in Spanish class, and Party Out of Bounds from the dance are replaced with I don't know what. I suppose I'll be finding that Berlin and Billy Idol are missing as well in later episodes. Sucks majorly!

Probaly has somethin to do with the music licensing etc....that's why they won't release Malcolm In The Middle season 2 & beyond on dvd & that's what held up Miami Vice from getting released on dvd for so long.

Not that it's an 80's show, but "Northern Exposure" got COMPLETELY RUINED when they released it on DVD. All of the crucial music, some that even made up the theme of an episode were poorly edited out and replaced with mindless garbage.

Yuck!

So it got the WKRP treatment? The utterly stupid licensing for music goes over its own head. It think its more important than it really is. No wonder music piracy exists.

I think what's worse is no one told Anne Beatts to wear a bra for her interview. Those things are just hanging off to the side. Quite disturbing...

Like I said earlier, that's why the rest of the seasons to Malcolm In The Middle won't be released on dvd anytime in the near future.

What i don't understand with this licensing stuff is, most of those songs are on dozens of cheap 80s compilation CDs all over the world, so how expensive could it be to get the rights to put them on a DVD???

What I really like about the DVD release is the interviews with each cast member. Almost all of them talk about the new wave music, KROQ, and Richard Blade.

Unfortunately, it's a completely different ballgame when it comes to rights for music on film/tv shows. In these cases, it's not the record companies that are making it difficult (most have whole departments dedicated to getting music on TV and on film), it's the publishing companies. I believe it's called "synch rights."

It's also very tough for a label to release a DVD with music videos from an artist where a clip features scenes from a movie. For instance, when I was at Universal, I was trying to get a "complete" Oingo Boingo DVD compilation released, but there's no way the movie studio would allow usage of the clips for "Dead Man's Party" (because of footage from Back To School) or "Weird Science."

Surly, does that mean that we might see an Oingo Boingo video collection in the near future less those two videos? [:)] They can stick in some tv performances of those tracks.

Not sure - I left the label in 2003! My guess is that without those 2 songs, the label would think it wasn't worth it as those are the only 2 to really break out beyond their big California fanbase.

He shouldn't have fought that Klingon in Star Trek III. Dude had a knife.
