Never realised The Specials were a punk or new wave band.

It's good that they included a couple of nods for those of us who have a wider interest in the genres (Radio Stars, The Flys, Wreckless Eric) and for £11.99 this is a very good value for money compilation.

To be fair, it is not a bad compilation.

I might actually get it.

I see 80s compilations in the shops & sort of say "They are some great tunes on this" & buy it.

But many of the compilations are very similar. I am very weary of them. Notwithstanding - I still buy them.

I am a big fan of Retro Active as some tought+ work goes into it.

Are Radio Stars, The Flys, Wreckless Eric new wave?

No one should buy this. Afterall, none of the "real punk bands"(Sum 41/Good Charlotte and the like) are anywhere on it?[:p][:)][:D]

You are right in saying that a lot of them are the same old stuff that we've seen many times before (Blue Monday and Tainted Love anyone?) so it's good to see this time around they've put some thought into it.

The Retro Active series contains a lot of remixes that would of remained only on vinyl although they have gone for the obvious choice of original track a lot of the time though I do like that Vitamin Z and especially Leisure Process are giving their chance to shine.

I give the selection a 9 out of 10. It really is a good representation of the classics of the era. We all have our personal tastes (I would have chosen different songs by XTC and Wire)but I would definitely buy this if I didn't already have most of these tracks.

This has got a good selection of tracks ranging from Punk-New Wave-pop. But, and it is a big but. Whats happened to the mastering? The volume of tracks is all over the place, some really loud, some really quiet. And even worse, if you check some tracks with a wave editor quite a few seem to be mp3 sourced!!!!

That's not surprising about the mastering as i have the 6 CD set 80s 12 inch that came out recently and that's exactly the same. I noticed it's EMI again who are responsible for this who seem to be going from one disaster to another just lately. In a nutshell they don't give a fuck and just fob us off with any old rubbish.

These Box Sets Could Be So Good With A Bit Of Care And Attention aswell. EMI Did agreat job with Killing Joke Reissues, but just recently like you said, they just seem to be after quick cash!

The bset Punk Box set to get is still The Rhino 4CD No Thanks! Because this, for once actually contains the single mixes and not the album versions.
