DEVO's new album "Something for Everybody"...

...is FANTASTIC in my opinion. the usual devo themes and lyrics, but it sounds so fresh- they got some remixers in to work it all over, and it really sounds great. great songs too, the best overall work from them i've heard since "shout"- maybe since "oh no"...
they sound reinvigorated, and their acidity is in full force: lots of shit slung at fat lazy americans, big corporations, pop culture, etc.
this has been on constant rotation all day, i really like it that much. i'm not having to "get into it" like i expected; and frankly, that's what i had to do as a teenager with "total" and "smooth noodle." maybe i'm just ready for techno rock from a bunch of 50-something white guys!
oh, and the guitars are ALL OVER this record. classic devo sound, many songs referencing older stuff. there is an obvious "whip it" drum pattern, there is a "gut feeling" chord progression (and it's my favorite song), there is a "snowball" sort of song, etc... and these songs all sound like part of a whole- some even crib from each other: "fresh" and "mind games" are very similar.
all in all, it's two thumbs up from me. best reunion album i've heard in a long time.

I have to admit, I initially rolled my eyes at the announcement of a new album, but I'm really enjoying it!
Fave tracks:
Fresh
What We Do
Please Baby Please
Don't Shoot (I'm A Man)
Human Rocket
March On
Let's Get To It (from the Deluxe version)

What a refreshing sound. I dig it more than "Smooth Noodle Maps". A lot more retro sound than I was expecting (in a good way). They've been touting it big time on FB.

The local venue is including a copy of the new CD with a ticket to their concert next month, so I haven't heard it yet. I'm not terribly excited about it, though it seems to be getting positive reviews.
I will admit, however, I am really entertained by their new strategy. Instead of reviling corporate culture, they're embracing it -- the focus groups, the attempt to appeal to all consumers, the interchangeable "faceless" masks they're wearing, the forced record sales by bundling with concert tickets (OK, that's annoying, but I get it). Great article here:

and MOST darkly humorous, in my opinion: bedding back down with the very record label that fucked them in the first place: warner brothers! the irony is too much for words. it's beyond meta!

I bought "Watch Us Work It" in 2007 from iTunes and really liked it and hoped they were coming out with something new, so 3yrs later, it's FINALLY here hehehe. I downloaded it illegally I will admit this morning. Having only heard (and loved) "Fresh", I wanted to at least get THAT song. I think I got to the 4th song when I started searching for local shops for the best deal on the REAL thing. Picked it up at Borders for only $9.99. I absolutely love this album! My ultimate favorites at this time include "Fresh", "Mind Games", "Human Rocket", "Step Up", "Later Is Now", "No Place Like Home" and "March On".
I am a fairly casual Devo fan, having their "Pioneers..." anthology and full-length albums like "Oh, No!...", "Shout", "New Traditionalists", "Total Devo" and "Smooth Noodle Maps" in my collection. So I obviously tend to lean toward their 80's synthpop stuff. This album seems to have very successfully married that era with their 70's guitar-driven material. It's a perfect balance in my opinion. I love that the guitar solo on "Fresh" is very reminiscent of "Be Stiff"!! They kicked butt on Letterman last week too, even if it wasn't COMPLETELY live....

you need the first 5 albums, pronto. with an emphasis on albums 1, 3, and 5.
