new label PSB

new label PSB

This happened almost overnight, but it makes you wonder why this happened. I'm a bit worried about physical releases in the near future:

The Pet Shop Boys have left Parlophone Records after a ground-breaking 28 years and have signed their forthcoming studio album “Electric” to Kobalt Label Services in a global deal.

Their new album “Electric” is produced by Stuart Price and will be released in June 2013.

It happened because when Universal Music Group bought EMI they were forced to divest certain assets to comply with European regulations. So they sold off Parlophone (to Warner Music). When something like this happens, longtime artists often leave because they're not used to dealing with a new staff (and may feel short-changed). Depeche Mode did it and don't be surprised to see others follow.

Kobalt offers artists a very lucrative deal, which particularly appeals to artists who have been around for a while: the artists retain all rights to their masters.

BTW, here's the teaser for PS Boys' Electric:

I don't really care about labels as long as they still keep on making albums. Wondering if these are a fresh batch of songs or left overs from the Elysium sessions ?

very cool teaser! the first few seconds are very reminiscent of patrick cowley's "menergy". a tribute to late 70's-early 80's gay disco? very, very cool! (ok, so i'm old. i'm over it.)

As usual i was beaten to it meant to share this info about Thursday after reading on their FB page. New song sounds great so who cares if it's leftover or not. Maybe it is and didn't fit with the rest of the Elysium. Regardless, unlike some i played and love Elysium to death. Helped that i obtained it a full three weeks before release as i love playing albums others haven't got. Good luck to the PSB. Regarding physical releases i don't care much anymore. Obviously the album will drop on CD (i bought the deluxe of Elysium) and the singles lately have been so God damn expensive. I bought them all but it certainly hurt. Around £5-6 with postage and some only available on their website

It's funny, but it seems that things like Columbia House and BMG Direct should be revived, since the majority of non-chart stuff can pretty much only be found via mail order. (Referring to CDs, of course.)

this album had better compensate for the last one (which I thought was an epic snoozefest - with the exception of "Face Like That").

I love the PSB but "Nightlife" was the last album I really got into. I have bought everything since but never have any desire to listen to them after the first few listens. Seems like they have lost their ability to make songs with catchiness and great hooks. [:(]

Couldn't disagree more with the last two comments. I loved the last album played it too death. Took a little while i admit but still, it's great. Face like that is a good track but so are Hold on, Breathing space, Ego music, Give it a go and many others. Also Love Etc. from the album before, 'Yes' is one of the best PSB tunes ever. Their last few albums have been great. Too many people seem to hark back to the 80's when it comes to the PSB. It's 2013 some 23 and 1/4 years after that decade ended and they might not have instant catchy top 15 singles one after another but they are still a great act. Oh and did i mention ALL 11 PSB albums proper have reached the Top 10 spanning some 26 1/2 years. There is a good reason behind that!

"Give it a go" is pretty decent but I remember a time when PSB music gave me a head-rush - songs like "Minimal", "Domino Dancing" etc. I still think they have it in them to put out a cracking track - and hopefully we see some of those on the next album.

The little snippet of the track "Electric" from the PSB's new album sounds promising.

Having Trevor Horn hold the production reins goes a LONG way - and that can definitely be seen on "Minimal".
