So8os Presents ZTT

Mixed & reconstructed by Blank & Jones. This will be released at the end of April this year.

This is what B&J have to say about this upcoming release:

“This is not a new remix album like we all heard before with the songs combined with the current dancefloor sounds, but neither is it another collection of well known long versions. We are “die-hard” ZTT Fans and we’ve been almost re-building the Trevor Horn studio of the ’80s in our studio. We are buying all those old synths and effect machines as many of the original multi-tracks are ‘dry’. We can do twelve-inch mixes which sound like they were done in the ’80s, but with the advances of the technology of today. For example, the new mixes won’t have varispeed which comes from tape machines, and so they are completely mixable for DJs, but most of all we are trying do 12#8243; Mixes which get you excited as someone who always treasured the original mixes”.

This sounds pretty exciting! Not hoping for a brickwalled sound like earlier B&J releases though!

Andy Hill did something similar with Bucks Fizz, making new 12" mixes of some early singles which didn't have a 12" at the time. Placed side by side it's hard to distinguish the old and new. I wish ths could happen more often.

That's actually one of my daydreams...to release 12" mixes of awesome 80's tunes that never had a proper extended version!! That's VERY cool to see they reconstructed an 80's studio! Impressed already!!! [:D]

so far it sounds like 2 frankie remixes.

1 unknown(rage hard?), and the other being 'two tribes'

rage hard is also confirmed on their homepage.

@ Ben: thank you for your interest in this project. it is very complicated to bring this project to the point in 2 sentences, so please excuse any misunderstanding. regarding varispeed: of course all original multi tracks are from mastertape, so they tend to run out of frame when you for example try to mix them with programms like traktor etc. what we did here, we dissected these multi parts into very small pieces and build them back again. by doing this on the computer they have no longer these vari speed symptones…probably too dj nerd and not interesting for many people, but as we mixed many 80s tracks for our so8os collections these were things that were really difficult to deal with….anyway, that is really not the main reason we are doing all this; )
we feel very honoured that we have the chance to do this project and hope that you will join us in the fun that this whole thing is bringing…we will prepare some films and sound samples in the next weeks, so that you can get better ideas of what we are doing….stay tuned.

That SDE story mentions that they got to listen to B&Js rework of Relax - so that's the other Frankie track (so far...)

ok, this is cool.

and i'll probably get it.

but seriously, they act like they've never
done this before.

multitracks have been out for relax for a few years now.
and there are tons of 80's songs that have stems and
multitracks with tons of mixes on youtube and everywhere else.

it's not that neat, or new. i've done my own mixes of
relax, and tons of other tracks too.

agreed, it's cool that they are getting two tribes, and
other ztt stuff.

but it's not that big of a deal to anyone that's been on
the internet for the last few years.
we've been remixing blue monday, don't you want me,
heart of glass, and tons of 80's songs from multitracks
ever since they've been on the net.

They're not just doing a remix, though. They're recreating one that someone has done before, bar by bar.

that's not what i got out of it.

they are making a 'new' remix that sounds like it is done
using the original samples and tracks.

which is exactly what using multitracks is like.

sure, if they are using actual hardware, that is harder.

but if sounds the same, in the end, who cares?

i'd rather listen to a 'new' remix like this:

much more interesting.

Oops, yeah, sorry, they're new mixes that sound like an old mix. I'll give not enough sleep as the reason, with the Olympics fucking up my normal schedule [:o)] (I'm 12h removed from Sochi).
