DADDIES of PUNK

Postby DSR » Sat Aug 19, 2006 8:49 pm

Here in MANILA punk was introduced by DZRJfm back in 1978-1979. According to my cousin who is much older than me, DZRJfm was the very first radio station who introduced RAMONES, THE CLASH, and SEX PISTOLs here in MANILA.[;)]

For me the DADDIES of PUNK GENRE would be:

SEX PISTOLS- British
RAMONES- Americans
BETRAYED- Filipinos

How about you guys? Who do you consider as DADDIES of PUNK GENRE?[;)]

What about Stooges,New York Dolls and Sonics?Different bands from different genres, but all used their raw and primitive music sense just to express the society decadence.THATS WAS TRUE PUNK ROCK IN REALLY WILD TIMES.

From where I see it there are different bands and artists that were influent to what then was punk: The Stooges (totally!), New York Dolls, Dr Feelgood and all those bands from what is called the Pub-Rock scene and even The Who.
Weirdly, The Who was also vital for the development of prog rock, punk rock's opposite.

Do you mean the first punk bands or those who influenced the genre?

For me, the big influences are:
Bowie
Iggy & the Stooges
Velvet Underground & Lou Reeds solo work
Runaways
MC5
Some of Mott the Hoople's songs

Though, I'm not really a fan of THE WHO, I guess their music would probably be origins of punk.

Kevin Ayers is often forgotten.

Although he's probably more of a New Wave influence then Punk.

I'll agree with the Who. Also, how about the Kinks?

The Stooges' 1st album was released in 1969.
It features such classics as "No Fun" (later covered by The Sex Pistols) and "I Wanna Be Your Dog" (cover version by Sid Vicious, Anti Pasti, Bizex-B and many others...)
Lemmy once said, as he fronted the MC5 at a reunion gig, that without the MC5 Motörhead or The Damned wouldn' t have existed. "These guys did it first", Lemmy shouted.

In my town, Gävle in Sweden, PF Commando were the pioneers.
They were our role models as we started Bizex-B back in 1980.
