I like the way you broke it down into categories, makes it easier to narrow it down. Now to start on mine.

Power Pop - Plimsouls - A Million Miles Away
Synthpop - Depeche Mode - Get the Balance Right
New Romantic - Duran Duran - Planet Earth
Post Punk - Chameleons - Up the Down Escalator
Ska/2-Tone - Madness - One Step Beyond
Rockabilly - Stray Cats - Rumble In Brighton
Gothic - Bauhaus - Bela Lagosi's Dead
Northern Soul - ABC - Tears Are Not Enough
Quirky - Devo - Mongoloid
Jangle Pop - REM - Radio Free Europe
The "CBGB" Scene - Blondie - Atomic
West Coast Scene - Surf Punks - Locals Only
Dance Oriented - New Order - Blue Monday (12" of course)
Aussie NW - INXS - Original Sin
Teutonic Pop - Kraftwerk - Pocket Calculator

These are really useful categories. Brilliant using "CBGB" as a category in itself. Could you expand on the "West Coast Scene" category? I'm assuming it would include west coast power pop bands like plimsouls, 20/20, monroes, missing persons.

Also, maybe "Art Rock" would be a better name than "Quirky." I think Polyrock would fit in this category.

"Dance Oriented" overlaps hugely (but not completely) with "Synthpop."

Not trying to nit-pick these categories, BTW. I just find myself trying to identify sub-genres frequently when I talk to people about new wave, so I found your list useful. For the main new wave styles I think I would use:

New romantic
Synthpop
Power pop
Ska revival
Goth
Techno
CBGB
Art rock

Problem is I never know where to stick The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Joe Jackson. I almost want to name the category "Guitar Rock" or something like that. It's not really power pop.
