Top CMJ Artists From 1979-1990

This is the product of both ADHD and OCD. A projct I'm going to be involved with in August prompted this. I tried to figure out the the Top 12 College radio band for 1979-1990, accofrding to the college radio bible, College Media Journal. My data set included the year end top 20s for those years, which is why I shot for 12 band. My method was the number of times an artist was in the year end top 20 and ranked by char position in the top 20. A few surprises along the way. First of all, it's a top 13 because there was a tie for 12th and I'll be presenting 14 cuts, because my top-ranked artist had two number one records for different years. Some other surprises: XTC's position.So, here is the list from top to bottom. My Christmas gift to you:

Thanks for compiling this! I caught myself wondering how many of the acts I saw live back in the 80s and came up with seven.

Interesting that Petty is one the list...although I do love his 80s records.

Edit regarding my Petty comment: meant "on" the list, not "one" the list. As a side note, Petty was tagged by a few journalists as being "punk" when his first two albums came out in the 70s, but I don't recall hearing him on college radio during the 80s.

Petty made a big splash early on-he's in the top 20s for the first three years and dis respectably. I can personally attest to playing some of his 80s records on my college radio station. Don't forget his later 80s hits. Last Dance With Mary Jane and Don't Come Around Here No More. Pack Up The Plantation is a GREAT live record.

I'm going to do a Top 24 for the first 24 years of CMJ, since I have the data.
