120 Minutes on VH1 Classic

Postby Jim2 » Sun Feb 05, 2012 4:32 am

I've watched the MTV2 version once. They had whatever passes for alternative today, with two "Classic" videos of bands that mattered.

I happened to be sleepless last weekend and found myself at VH1 Classic at 4:00 am Sunday morning. Here are the videos they played:

* = commercial break

Hour 1
Human League - Human
OMD - Telegraph (interrupted a little more than a minute in by the requied weekly test of the Emergency Alert System)
* (This commercial break lasted about 5 whole minutes!)
alice in chains - rooster
u2 - i will follow
foo fighters - big me
foo fighters - rope
*
Bjork - Army Of Me
Tori Amos - Cornflake Girl
Blondie - Union City Blues
*
Smiths - There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Echo And The Bunnymen - Bring On The Dancing Horses

Hour 2
English Beat - Save It For Later
Cure - Charlotte Sometimes
Joy Division - Atmosphere
*
Blur - She's So High
red hot chilli peppers - give it away
Lemonheads - Mrs. Robinson
Depeche Mode - Just Can't Get Enough (Audio washed out)
* (This commercial break is the last you see of the "VH1 Classic 120 Minutes" bumper. All the remaining videos come out of the commercial directly without any VH1 bumpers.)
Dramarama - Anything Anything
Modern English - I Melt With You (original version)
Talk Talk - Talk Talk (version 2)
*
bad religion - 20th century (digital boy)
Alarm - 68 Guns

Back in MTV's heyday, a regular hour would have 12 music videos and MTV News at 10 minutes til. Now it's 11 videos per hour and lots of commercials.

Missed this weeks show, but when was the last time you saw so many quality New Wave videos?

Just curious to know if they are showing the 'studio' version of 'I Will Follow' with the 'Boy' backdrop superimposed or some live version.

I no longer care for u2, so forgive me for not being specific which version it was but it was live with a version that began with a b. Sorry I can't help you any more on this.

They usually play the U2 live version from Red Rocks 1983. If you ask me that lineup of videos is average to poor. Probably because they play them so much, VH1 Classic. Every once in a while they pull out a gem from the vault that hasn't been played in a few years.

Thanks Jim. I'm sure it was a live version. They never play the studio one.

Elvis, let me know if you need anything from me. I've got some time on my hands.

Thanks eighties, I may shoot you an email. Down in Costa Rica still.
Ahh, that VH1 video by U2 is called the Prechyroned Version, I have it. I have the other three version, one from 1980, with a white background, superimposed live appearance, poor quality vid in that it's a 352 X 288 PAL, but it would work with some care. Otherwise their is the Old Grey Whistle version from 1981 also.

Just stopping by to let out an opinion.

As someone who's no longer gets Cable, and fills all my video needs with You Tube when I want it, half of it's pretty damn good. Reading the list, my only major gripe was the EAS interrupting OMD instead of Alice In Chains (Heard "Rooster" too many times, just my opinion) and a small one being choosing "Human" when there's plenty of good and well-known League songs to choose from (Never was a fan of that song, too MOR for me) - "(Keep Feeling) Fascination," "Mirror Man," or even the too well-played but still iconic "Don't You Want Me" would have been much more cooler.

It was cool to see a Blur video that was not "Song 2" (still love the song, though). Something from Modern Life Is Rubbish or Parklife would have been better (Replacing one of those Foo Fighters videos with Blur would have better). My dream list would have been a slight re-shuffle of "For Tomorrow" next to The Smiths. Still, "She's So High" is a good one. And any Talk Talk is fine as their early singles were excellent choices (Maybe next time, "Such a Shame" or the good original video of "It's My Life," the one with the scribbles on Mark's mouth...). And any Bjork, Beat, Smiths, Blondie, Cure, and Echo is great.

Just my thoughts, but all in all at least it was fine enough. especially for VH1 today.
