It has to be the Pistols...not just the greatest UK Punk Band of All time, but one of the greatest bands of all time IMHO... only the Beatles have influeced music more...of course its just my opinion...never has so much been done with so little...[:)]

The Sex Pistols and Clash were great. But I'm going with The Fucktards!

Definitely Sid Vicious and the Pistols. Granted the influence they have made on the music scene, but what other group do you know cussed out a sitting monarch? LOL

Now "The Fucktards", why didn't anyone come up with that name in the 80's. That would have been a cool name for a band.

Hey Venkman, don't let anyone who cannot perceive a tongue-in-cheek statement get to you... that's their inability. Remember, Illigitime Non Gorborendum (Don't let the b@st@rds get you.) For all those who fall in that category, might I remind you that this is the internet and that as such we are missing the non-verbal components of communication such as tonal and facial expression. Granting others the benefit of the doubt will prevent your panties from wadding up and other undergarment catastrophes. Let the good natured ribbing continue. [:D]

I voted for buzzcocks, their lyrics dealt with issues that the other groups at the time steered clear of, but I have to say that the Fall are the only original punk group to produce fantastic work throughout the 80's/90's and the naughties.

That must surely make them the greatest in some sense.

Is it better to have one classic period in which your group was untouchable or to have a long career producing brilliant tunes?

The Pistols, because their debut album is the greatest punk thing ever. The Clash morphed out of punk. The Jam were great but were more of a mod/postpunk thing.

There were many more great potpunk bands then punk bands, in my opinion.

If you haven't heard Ladytron, Maximo Park, The Rakes, Interpol,
Stellastarr, or Bloc Party, you ain't paying attention.

1. If you look at the entire lifespan of the Clash, then they weren't really punk rock from start to finish.

2. The Stranglers, as great as they were and as long as they lasted, were punk only for the first couple of albums.

3. The Jam has too strong of a MOD revival connection to be even in this category IMO.

4. The Sex Pistols, don't even get me started. Totally fabricated band and one of the most overrated groups in history, probably the most. They made only 1 studio album...come on! Great style and look, but musically inferior to the Clash and many other punk bands.

5. Song for song, melody or melody, the GREATEST punk band not just in the UK but of all time!!!!!!!!!!

5.

Agreed.

Disagreed. Just because one spawns a subgenre does not automatically negate one's credentials in the original genre. It's like saying that Bowie wasn't freakbeat because he became a glam rocker.

I disagree. They created the attitude of punk--the nihilism, the shock. And don't make them sound like the Monkees--they played their own instruments--not very well, mind you, but they weren't the Backstreet Boys. Besides, through the media manipulation of McLaren, they gave punk a public face, and fired the public's imagination in a way that the Buzzcocks never could.

"One studio album"? That's like saying Hiroshima was one bomb. "Musically inferior"? I'd argue that their lack of talent was an aesthetic instrument in and of itself.

Eh...Spiral Scratch was great, but the albums were chock full of filler.

Me thinks some people need to re-visit the Jam's 1st album in '77. Awesome punk!

London Calling was a seminal album in the punk pantheon, but without a doubt Bollocks took the pop culture world by the mouth and kicked it in the teeth. That is punk. And "Holiday in the Sun" is a brilliant track.
