Your favorite sub-genre of New Wave

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

We weren't calling it Power Pop back then, we just called it New Wave. But how do you refer to New Wave that isn't the New Romantic/Techno/Synth/Goth or Punk/Post-Punk variety? Up tempo, old fashioned guitars + rhythmn section, positive outlook (not gloomy).

With Badfinger, Raspberries, Queen, etc., Power Pop certainly predated New Wave. But a lot of New Wave was really Brit Pop: Elvis & the Attractions, the Records, Nick Lowe, Squeeze, XTC, Vapors.

Add in American acts like the Cars, Cheap Trick and the Knack, and that's what I'm referring to as Power Pop. Call it the Skinny Tie variety if you like, but that's what gets my motor running... and apparently lots of us "New Wavers" too.

Would you really call New Order and Depeche Mode "techno"?

I don't know...That seems like an icky word to describe them.

Techno in the 80's!? I'd rather call it Synthe-Pop for that time.

POST PUNK for me.

Post-punk!!!
I also like Synth Pop.
And I don't know where to put Cure and Smiths but I'd like to have an option for them.

Ok... and let's throw Echo there into.

I like the "mopey brits" category as much as Post-punk.

New Wave came from Punk, not the other way around. That being said I likes me some synthesizers and wacky haircuts, but I like skinny ties and Rickenbacker guitars and songs about not getting the girl. And I like mohawks and songs about smashing the state (but not as much as I did when that stuff was still relevant and shocking instead of a Hot Topic marketing campaign). And I liked spooky songs about morbid topics and girls in fishnets and lots of black eye makeup.

I guess what I'm saying is that I like it all.

I guess Punk but that came before newwave as others have said. Maybe synth rock too as that covers DEVO and Duranie! Iike rockabilly fashion but not so the music persay I prefer the original 50s rock n roll LOL[:I]

I didn't know about New Romantic til I heard DD 'Planet Earth' and my older bro said they were new romantic, I equated it with frilly shirts for some reason!(was young child) Actually I had one and so did my mum they were actually in fashion for girls about that time!I've refused to wear anything frilly since![:I][:D]

Techno is an accurate label, as that genre of music (New Order, Depeche Mode) was often called techno-pop or techno-rock (not the serious BPM rave-style stuff that later came to be known as just techno).

New Romantic is where it's at, though, and always has been. [:D]
