Worst Songs of the 80's

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

Seriously, this list should be titled "In case you've forgotten, here were some songs in the 80's." Most of them, while not necessarily good, aren't anywhere near as awful as they're portrayed.

Also "Mickey" by Toni Basil isn't on this list, and to this day that is one of the only 80's songs I refuse to listen to.

These lists are stupid anyway -- he has Soft Cell's "Tainted Love" on the list WTF!!!

-- for me it all started with "Tainted Love" and "Don't You Want Me?"

On a related note (maybe someone has already posted about this):

A CD of "stripped" acoustic versions of the "greatest" 80s hits has just been released.

The list is a bit obvious and simplistic. "We Built This City" is probably the worst song ever because (1) it sucks and (2) it was done by a band that was once important. None of the musicians on that list are important enough to hate. Although everyone who sang on "We Are The World" should be shot. By the way, when is Michael Jackson's Katrina charity song coming out?

I think they got it right at VH1 when they did something similar, you go from "White Rabbit" and "Somebody to Love," playing Altamont to..."We Built This City"? Disgraceful!

I also agree that We Built This City is the absolute worst, the epitome of suckitude, the zenith of awfulness.

To steal from a classic Opus movie review in Bloom County:

"Starship's new single, 'We Built This City,' has brought the word 'BAD' to new levels of badness. Bad singing. Bad music. Bad everything. This song just oozed rottenness from every bad moment...Simply bad beyond all infinite dimensions of possible badness. Well maybe not that bad, but Lord, it wasn't good."

Two other reasons to hate "We Built" are (1) it was a #1 single and (2) it purported to be anti-establishment, but of course was the exact opposite.

Hmm, they left out "Two of Hearts" by Stacy-Q. Just play it for someone and they will immediately beat you up. Then, half an hour later they will come back and beat you up again because they can't get out of their mind. This really happens, try it yourself:

I agree with the comments about "We Are The World". I can't hear that song without thinking of the food bought with the proceeds rotting in warehouses due to poor distribution, or filling the bellies of armed warlords.

If those songs were so bad why were most of them big hits?Thats the
worst top ten list for worst songs I have seen. The folks here at NWO should have been consulted.I think I posted Mr Roboto as my worst 80,s song a while back and I will stand by it.

I always thought Boy's Don't Cry's "I want To Be A Cowboy" was utter shite.

If I could buy my reasoning,
I would pay to lose

I nominate "Head To Toe" by Lisa Lisa and The Cult Jam. I hated that song from the core of my soul...I actually broke up with my girlfriend because it was her favorite song, and she would sing it at the top of her lungs everytime it came on the radio (which was quite often). One of the few songs that actually made me want to jam icepicks into my ears...[:o)]

OH MY GOD! I remember that particular strip AND the classic line "but Lord, it wasn't good" line! LOL! (He was talking about a Benji movie, wasn't he?)

Anyway, all those songs appalled me. Except the "Fish Heads" song, which never counted as a real song to me but just a Dr. Demento moment.

I think that "Wild Wild West" song by Escape Club makes me want to do something violent and burn things down. Plus, it's a totally rip off of Elvis Costello's "Pump It Up".
