<br>Thanks for this poll SuNomi! A chance to enhance the recognition of some iconic Aussie bands. [:D]

My vote is for Midnight Oil. Such a powerful band, and such an icon here in Australia.

The history of the band and their music is intertwined with many of the most important issues for us over the last 15 or 20 years: mainly the Anti Nuke movement and the reconciliation movement (addressing the shameful way we have treated the indigenous people of our country).

By the way, many of you may not be aware that Peter Garett, the singer, is now a member of the Federal Parliament of Australia (Labour Party).

I would LOVE to see the giant chrome dome become Prime Minister. He would give some other leaders (who, for obvious reasons I won't name here [;)] ) some serious stick!!![:D]

Thanks for bringing politics into it you kook. By that measure you must be a John Cougar fan! I heard Streisand is touring, did you get tix?

My vote is for Single Gun Theory

When I think of great bands from Australia, the first name that comes to mind is always The Church. They get my vote.

Midnight Oil makes me laugh. I remember about sixteen years ago, they were filming a video for a single off of "Blue Sky Mining"; they were to film it in front of Exxon headquarters in New York--a spontaneous concert a la "Streets Have No Name". Unfortunately, they got the location wrong, which kind of ruined the point of the whole thing.

Being an already morally-compromised rock star, I believe Garrett would sell out as easily as any politician.

As no INXS or The Church were on the run, my vote went to The Birthday Party.
I ended up choosing the obscure but I would hvae liked to have the chance of not picking the obscure and to give my vote to INXS!! [:D]

Hmmm...well, first things first! Do you always make assumptions like the above about people? As it happens, I would also have voted for Single Gun Theory if they had been on the list!!!!!!!!!!! (do you know about Jaqui Hunt's solo project?)

Oh, I'm sorry! You are on Christmas Island. Maybe you haven't heard yet? Are you in the detention centre there? Good luck...hope you stay there!!! [:(!]

Secondly....I was a part of the scene being discussed here!.[;)]

Ok, sorry to everyone else for my impolite response to rat scabies (what an appropriate name)...but it was deserved!

Yeah, The Church, Divinyls, Birthday Party (and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds..!!!!!) all great!

I am only posting this because saying that Garrett is a sell-out is just so uninformed and so wrong! (sorry Peter Venkman [:)] )

He has come out with some uncompromising statements about the renewed nuclear power debate here recently, for instance (he once ran for the anti nuke party here some years ago)...oops, sorry rat scabies...politics again!!![:D]

There is a nice potted history here:

http://www.petergarrett.com.au/c.asp?id=8

And just to make this post vaguely on topic...has anyone here heard of The Triffids ( 'Wide Open Road'). From my home town, and a great band!
Cheers!

Actually, thinking of The Triffids, they belong in the 'most under-rated as well...but for those who don't know of the band (I am sure most people here would have heard of them, though?) Here are a couple of great links. I love this band.

If you like The Go-Betweens...you will LOVE this!

The first is a great bloggers bio of the band's career...near the bottom of the page is a list of links to download many of their songs...download 'Wide Open Road'...a classic!

The second link is David McComb (singer) commenting on the songs and the circumstances of their coming into being! (also his diaries and lots of other cool stuff)

Enjoy!

Hi design_femme [:)]

I don't know if Jaqui has actually released anything yet. She told me about this early this year ... which reminds me, I haven't been in touch with her since then...how time passes !!

Mondo Rock are my favorite Ozzy group. Because you omitted them (in favor of two Kiwi bands), I voted Men at Work just to piss off everyone else in the thread.
