Can anyone tell me the difference between "sampling" and "stealing" ?

I think when they sample, they typically have the artist's permission to do so. I could be wrong though.

Will I Am from Black Eyed Peas sampled "don Quixote" by Magazine 60 on "Got It From My Mama", and there's a new song by Baby Dollz called "My Type" that has the keyboard hook from "Situation" by Yaz in it.
As a DJ, it's sick, but on the other hand, it's fun to hear the old stuff cranked up, and none of the clubbers realize it's a 20 yr old sample!

Lady Sovereign sampled the Cure's Close to Me for her song "So Human". She used so much of the song it was almost a cover.

Snog's "Reigning Terror" (industrial song from 90s) samples Love & Rocket's "The Game".

Kraftwerk's "eins zwei drei vier" countdown in "Showroom Dummies" has been used in Covenant's "Dead Star". (And I think a ton of other electronic/dance songs too.)

Massive Attack's "Man Next Door" samples The Cure's "10:15 Saturday Night."

You know what's terrible about this is the fact I'm pretty certain none of the idiots in that band have ever heard the original song but some sycophantic DJ buddy of thiers was like "hey you should use this." What a waste.

All that aside though, I hate samples, seriously, but I don't mind when bands do straight up covers of songs. That at least isn't them taking credit for something they didn't do. I don't minde the No Doubt version of It's My Life, it's not as good as the original, but it's better than anything else No Doubt ever did.

> Utah Saints sampled Simple Minds 'New Gold Dream (81,82,83,84) to great effect in the early 90's

I recall when Utah Saints appeared with "What Can You Do for Me?", which had Annie Lennox's vocals from "There Must Be an Angel", and some co-workers who weren't really into electronics asked me to tape it for them. I did so, but a mix that didn't have the Annie Lennox vocals in it [:D].

Marie3 turned me on to Rogue Traders and the song Voodoo child samples Elvis Costello pump it up. They also sample The Knack in Way To Go. Thanks Marie!

There's a ton of other material that's been sampled through the years but altered so much that we don't even recognize it.

Thats true Marv, especially with the artists today. I don't mind sampling if the song is good. It kind of brings life back to the original. I let my kids hear the songs then play them the originals from the 80's.

Totally. My son bugs out when I identify a sample and then play him the original. Someone redid Alphaville's Forever Young and it was funny when I played the original. He seems pretty fascinated by the tying of two generations in this way.

Very Very True .... some take a little time to discover. .....

LOL .. My son bugs out too, when I tell him it was already done once before in the 80's

<br>Set Adrift on memory Bliss by PM Dawn heavily used samples from "True" by Spandau Ballet.
Not only does it sample a lot of Spandau Ballet's "True". The rhythm and base line for "Set Adrift On Memory Bliss" are pretty much a direct copy of the .. rhythm break .. from the "Soul Searchers - Ashley's Roach Clip" from 1974.

Wikipedia has about 45 different songs that used something from Ashley's Roach Clip" to make something else.

Listen at about 3:34 for PM Dawn

One of the most blatant ones is Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five's note for note 'sample' of Liquid Liquid's 'Cavern' they did for 'White Lines'. Plagiarism would be a more exact description.
