Nowadays, I kinda like it, if for no other reason that nostalgia for an experience that led me to get into fantastic fighting shape. I guess I can thank the irritation of THAT SONG for helping make me such a fitness minded guy.

So it's true. Great art IS born out of great pain.

I'm with Schwenko on this one. "Captain Of Her Heart" is not only the LAST thing I think of when when I think of New Wave, it is total easy listening schmaltz. Right up there with "Key Largo" by Bertie Higgins or "Into The Night" by Benny Mardones, etc.

Say what you will about that mediocre Benny Mardones tune. But Captain Of Her Heart really had a lot of soul and really good songwriting and lyrics. It reminds me more along the lines of Sting or Annie Lennox than Air Supply or Barry Manilow. Really. It was very close to having a new wave sound. Hell I'd even call it a new wave ballad.

Dreck? Shmaltz?

I know music is a matter of taste but I don't see how anyone with any kind of ear for music can listen to that song and say Dreck or Shmaltz. Sure, then can take a pass on it. Take it for what it is, a great song complete with reappearing piano, great vocals, a brilliantly incorporated saxophone and a steady drum beat. Kurt Maloo from Double released an album last year and redid 4 double songs. Check it out.

Shouldn't Kurt Maloo rename the group "Single"?

I know...dumb joke.

LOL! You beat me to it. You've done it now though, Hutter. Watch out for Tom D and the taste police. [|)]

On topic - Captain Of Her Heart? Harmless enough, I suppose. They're no Robbie Nevil though. [:D]

Sounds like a 80's bar band, ala Huey Lewis and the News or George Thorogood and the Destroyers.

Upon review, you're absolutely right- it's New Wave all the way. I can definitely hear The Clash influence along with a bit of The Cure. It's so edgy, dark and foreboding... oooh, don't make me listen to it alone! I remember when we used to mosh to "Captain Of Her Heart" back in the old days. Still have some scars. Bet Paul Weller wishes he could have written THAT one.

Yes, I agree. "The Captain of Her Heart" is a pretty, moving single. I also enjoyed "Your Prayer Takes Me Off" from that same LP. They kind of remind me of Fra Lippo Lippi's more quiet moments, and even Per Sorensen acknowledged the similarity when I spoke with him before their last Manila trip.

MIKEY did you know that 99.5RT was the first one who played "CAPTAIN OF THE HEART"? I also like this band. When the song was featured on a rare CLOSE-UP compilation VINYL here in MANILA together with STYLE COUNCIL I immediately bought it. Some Pinoys also level them with MIKE FRANCIS who was also a frequent MANILA visitor.

DSR, yes, that's where I first heard it, on 99.5 RT. They used to play "The Captain of Her Heart" and also "Your Prayer Takes Me Off." I don't think we've added Double to WXB 102 yet; we will soon. There really isn't that much of a difference between "The Captain of Her Heart" than, say, "Coming Home" by Fra Lippo Lippi or "The Downtown Lights" by the Blue Nile. Just really well-crafted European crooner pop. New Wave doesn't always have to be edgy; the wide scope of the genre is what makes it endlessly fascinating.
