Simple answer from me. I hate artists that suck. Period.

As far as Swampy's dislike for uniform images in bands, and Blir's distain for the French...how can you not love Les Rockets?

although I agree that alot of bands make bad music and only focus on their image..there are some exceptions where they make their image work for them...look at U2's ZooTv tour, and all of Madonna's phases (my still fav vid of hers is 'human nature'..a.nyone remember that?! :) anyway...in the end its about passion. if they believe in what theyre doing then its more convinceing to the listener!

I usually despise most of the "classic" 60's and 70's and 80's new wave crap that got played into the ground before the next generation rediscovered the "classics" and the re-played the hell out of it again (Skynard, Stones, Beatles, Clapton, Billy Idol, Tears for fears...) I still hate most music that the artists sold out to make it into the top 10. The formula usually goes, a smaller independant group that makes original music with a unique sound gets discovered and hires a manager with a name who grooms them into generic everybody sound and only retaining a little of there original sound, then release there hyped sell out album, the album does okay but not that great, then the second album comes out and really sucks, manager drops them and they try to get back to there roots but have lost there original fan base, drift off into obscurity. sell out, lose out then die. Classic formula...oh then I hate em'.
Wow. You are what the people on this one forum I used to frequent would call "rockist". But to me I think that's a very boring way of viewing music. I personally evince a great thrill from viewing the exotica and dramaticism of the New Romantic genre. All of that peacock feathery is like getting a thrilling view of an Otheworld where people are fabulous and life is never bland or dull or boring.
LOL! I've always prefered bands like New Order, Echo & the Bunymen, Chameleons, Psych Furs over the New Romantics, and in the mid-late 80's jumped on the UK indie's scene and firmly landed a fan of "shoegaze" and "britpop". I wouldn't call it "rock" in the traditional sense, but the music always included mainly guitars, and you wouldn't be able to pick the band members out of a crowd.

I try not to dwell on stuff I hate unless I am in a rant mode for some reason! But I guess I hate the typical charty everybody look and sound the same like drones crap alot of that stuff is image over content as is alot of pop/rock music now. Unlike Swampthing though I quite like it if bands have a good image but I don't care too much either way. I just hate music where people follow formulas or try too hard to fit in to a certain image...[}:)][xx(]

Amen on the "snot nosed juvenile sound" thing. Although with The Femmes it was a calculated, purposeful sneer in Gano's voice that, IMO, added to the attitude of their sound.

Nowadays it seems like whoever sounds like they haven't finished puberty gets to be the lead singer.

I hate The Smiths because, aside from the near total lack of melody on most of their songs, Morrissey's voice is godawful, his lyrics are beyond godawful and his complete disregard for rhyme and meter is revolting. But, like the OP said, do I need a reason?

After all, their guitarist was Johnny Marr, very well repsected and considred one of the better guitarist and song writers of the 80's. With that said, I can think of a few their songs that don't contain a nice melody.

What is it with the anomisty of the Colourfield or the Smiths? With Britneys and Spice Girls and Achy Breaky Hearts around, we've forgotten the true enemies! (Given that, yes, I did bash later Wham!)

......If they lack substance in their works.
......Unprofessional.
......If all their songs sounds the same over and over again.

Marr was obviously the only respectable thing about The Smiths. If he hadn't have been there, they would have been totally worthless.
With that said, I can think of a few their songs that don't contain a nice melody.
A few is all I can think of that do contain a nice melody.

"Stop Me If You Think That You've Heard This One Before" (I think this is their best song)
"Girlfriend in a Coma"
"What Difference Does It Make"
"Hand in Glove"
"This Charming Man"
"Bigmouth Strikes Again"
"The Boy with the Thorn in His Side"
"Ask"
"Panic"
"Shoplifters of the World"

Most of which were basically ruined by the decision to lay Morrissey's vocals and lyrics on top of them. I've always said The Smiths were an atrocious vocal band, but they might have made a good instrumental one. Aside from being a negligible songwriter and singer, Morrissey had no clue whatsoever how to compose a vocal melody, and trying to steer him in the right direction in that department was something Marr failed at.

Never mind all the pseudo-intellectual psychobabble, wannabe poetry and botched attempts at satire. Horrible group. Next.

I find Morrissey's and The Smiths songs a bit depressing. I don't like it very much.
Unlike ABC and Spandau Ballet, both New Romantic bands. I've always get the feeling that New Romantic is the most happiest, cheerful side of New Wave. That's why i love it !

This is very entertaining reading.[:D]

I agree pretty much with your reasons as stated above.
I'd second IMAGE OVER SUBSTANCE, particularly if it really co-opted their musicianship, or rather, tried too hard to cover up lack of musicianship with image 'n' flash.

I didn't like gimmicks. Bands like Sigue Sigue Sputnick and Haysi Fantaysee (except I LOVE "Shiny Shiny") really irritated me. But for me, it was no big deal, b/c then I just chose not to listen to it and it was all good.

So really, most of my "hate" would be reserved for formulaic Top 40 tripe. Too much sell-out, overproduced, schlocky, ballady hype.

Finally, I was going to say "overproduced" music, but that's not really what randy was getting at. It's not so much that I didn't like that artist, but that I didn't like that type of music. We all have some faves that occasionally had some overproduced, glossy music (just look at one of my faves, Duran Duran).
