Very very tough call. I honestly dont think I could chose. Think of the best songs and pick one. Notorious or Hello Again... dang

I give up, I am too weak to choose.

The Cars : American geeky, of course had great songs early on...
Duran Duran: Euro Cool, of course had great songs early on...

Duran Duran. I'm a HUGE fan. Besides the night remixes (although I have some on vinyl), I have all of their albums, even Big Thing (gag). I've loved them for years, I think their music is great!

I have an advance of their new CD as well, it's fantastic. They really sound great.

It's a bit of a toss up for me. I like 'em both, but not huge fans of either. If my nipples were really twisted, I guess I'd choose (early) Duran Duran.

Cars VERSUS Duran Duran?

Although there are both New Wave, their styles are very different, aren't they?

The Cars and Duran Duran had something in common, though, in my opinion. They had two outstanding albums and then both went down in overall quality from there. I mean, I find "Heartbeat City" by the Cars or "Big Thing" by Duran equally unbearable compared to "The Cars" and "Candy-O" and "Duran Duran" and "Rio."

Perhaps I could settle it this way:

I like my favorite Cars song, "Dangerous Type" better than my favorite Duran song, "Hold Back the Rain."

I'm going to have to go with the Cars on this one. I think their first 3 albums are much stronger than any of the albums Duran Duran came out with - given a choice between my favorite Cars album ("Panorama") and my favorite Duran Duran album (their first one), I'd choose "Panorama" without thinking about it. But I never really considered the Cars as new wave, they always seemed borderline to me. I can't deny that when they first came out, they had a fresh new sound, unlike anything that was out at the time. And to give Duran Duran their due, they showed how powerful the music video could be to a band's career.

I have to go with the Cars. Their music could not have come at a better time. Being 13 years old and starting to change into a man with all those hormones racing through your body, The Cars' music seemed to reflect the experiences adoloscence brings. To me their music was a real synchronicity about being a teenager. The timing was perfect. (This was accurately portrayed in the famous pool scene with Phoebe Cates in Fast Times At Ridgemont High)

I like Duran Duran but the Cars will always remind me of those days of early, and edgy adoloscence!

The Cars broke up before they had a chance to suck.

Duran Duran, although they've had their moments since "Rio", have sucked for nearly 20 years.

But then again, I'm ugly like most of the Cars so I can relate to them. Maybe if I was a bit more of a pretty boy, I'd take the other side?

The first time I met MikeP, he said (and I quote), "Hey, you look just like something I flushed down the toidy this morning".

JFiber was a bit nicer. His first words to me were "MMMMMM....roadkill!"

I am a teenager so i don't see any of these bands as being "mainstream' further more new wave is technically the more mainstream version of late 70's alternative music, isn't it?

One of my co-workers, who is in his early to mid 20's has heard some of the music I like and is appalled that his beloved KROQ would have played such 'crap'.

I'm talking about XTC, Split Enz, Squeeze, the Jam, the Clash, etc.

This stuff was considered commercially viable, even mainstream at one point.

Unfortunately, time has wiped away the coolness of this era and sneeringly refers to it all as 'stupid' new wave, 'gay' new wave, etc. It's strange that a musical era so creative and important is now dismissed by the critcs as being boring and/or embarrassing!

Yeah; your 20-something work buddy has SUCH better taste than oldsters like us. Nickleback, Limp Bizkit, the Strokes, and Creed should stand the test of time, and are SO much better than the groups you mentioned. What an ass-wipe.
