Capital didn't do shit to promote them, Had a college friend who worked there and confirmed it, a greatly underated band/group
Since I never heard "Computer One" on the radio so much as once and only saw the video on MTV late at night no more than 2 or 3 times, I can believe it. The only thing they did right was release the 3:55 U.S. mix/edit as the single instead of the inferior Australian 4:17 version. Never mind that they didn't release "The Good Life" period. That's the one I can listen to in repeat mode over and over again.

P.S. Why the hell is "Ransom Note & Beyond" so impossible to find? I have two of the singles from the "& Beyond" period, but would like to hear the rest of it sometime before I die.

(This was going to be XL Capris - "What Do They Do in Igloos?," but the bastards suspended RStrathfield and yanked all his clips. Thanks, YouTube.)

Depeche Mode with their patent-leather fetishes, Duran Duran pouting & preening about like male models, A Flock Of Seagulls with that legendary mousse habit...

NEW ORDER!!! The only band I know that never care what they wear..
Well, and also those 90's Grunge bands that killed the hair make-up metal of the 80's..

But goin' back to the word "Unpretentious".. Being a huge DM fan.. I never care what they wear, it's all about there Musical Substance.
They evolve so much, from New romantic (boyish band), Black Leather thingie (metro-sexual?), Long hair Dave Gahan 90's (grunge rock star!!).. and back to being the biggest New wave act ever.. well, if U2 is not included.. it's always about the Music (for the masses)..

There's a good point out there... New Order!! They've always dressed as if they were at home watching TV and never had a make-up phase, or a leather phase or a weird hair phase. [:p]

Ultravox, although they were directly linked with the New Romantic Movement, I think look very normal. Tears For Fears was unpretentious but only at the start of the second album. OMD and New Order are definites though.

Boy , alot of bands that have been mentioned are extraordinarilly pretentious...I think it was part of the initial movement of being an electronic band. this sort of elitist vision of oneself...'we don't use pedestrian guitars.' synths were incredibly expensive back then.... thats part of the reason I loved synth bands.....

but the new wave band that used the synth in the least 'arty/elitist/pretentious' way was the B-52s

New Order....right on the money. Very down to earth and into the music and not necessarily the image.
I have to put the Chameleons UK here too.

I agree with the many that said New Order. Listening to their music anyone can tell that they were all about the music.

I think the video "Perfect Kiss" is a good example showing just how unpretentious New Order is!

New Order isn't synthpop. My favorite part of their music is the bass lines and signature guitar chords. [}:)]
