I prefer collecting vinyl but out of convenience, I listen to CDs. The sound of a portable MP3 player connected to a component system just doesn't cut it.

I am so glad that I never ever even once bought a cassette. I'm kinda proud of my younger self to have had the prescience of their impermanence. Good job Little Blir! [:o)]

I went through a brief cassette-buying phase. Luckily, I've had the sense to replace all the good ones on......VINYL!!!!!

It was a great form of media. Think of the days you used to record stuff off those old ghettoblaster2000s. Some of them, you even had to keep quiet because the mic feature would also record background noise[:D] Mix-tapes! I used to be king of mix-tapes![8D] Remember making those for your friends... or, better yet, your love interest? Man, I was a poor sap making those for chicks[:I]

I was a Big Cassette fan! I had hundreds. Compared to records, they were easier to pack up and carry---they were also great to travel with due to their small size and portability. You can't pack your fave records along for a trip to Egypt or Greece etc. I could not afford CDs anyway, nor did I even have a CD player until about 8 yrs. ago. Cassettes were also king for recording off the radio and creating the perfect mixed tape. I still have all my cassettes, altho several of them seem to have "dropped out" or whatever the right term is--which, although I rarely listen to them any longer, I can't seem to part with. My husband suggested that I should take all the covers and make a scrapbook/ photo album out of. I think that's a great idea. But, yeah....I have lots of fond memories of my cassettes.

Walkmans and cassettes! You're right, can't take the record with you on a jog or on the bus. I remember when my mom got a Walkman for cassette. That meant I could listen to Hall 'N Oates, Cheap Trick, and Crowded House at the ball field. That totally rocked[8D]

vinyl is good from a nostalgic point of view, and there is stuff i find on vinyl that won't ever get re-released.
cd is good as a lot of material is being re-issued, usually remastered (the big controversy that is remastering: music was not so well recorded/mixed 20 odd years ago, now it can be cleaned-up, we can hear exactly what was played and how it really sounded!), with rare extras and history.
cassettes are cool - i find a few decent ones now and then, but if i like it enough, i'll get it on a more stable format.
mp3s are ok, but at the end of the day they are not subjective enough - let's face it, music relates to our lives and the recordings are objects that have a physical prescence in the form of vinyl or cd's - but an mp3 doesn't really exist - they will always just be a little bit of code/programming, secondary to the material that they represent.
my ipod has mp3s on it, but in 20 years time i'll stumble across a song in a different format and be nostalgic for the song, not for mp3...

how come no one mentions 8-track [;)]

What you hear quite often these days are the levels boosted so high that the audio has to be compressed and the dynamic range decreased because of the compression.

This is so true - the biggest crime going today. I wonder if it's simply because of the emergence of really great optimizer/compressor/EQs and super high sampling rates that allow the engineers to massage the hell out of the music without the distortion that you would have gotten in the old days. Back then, I'd bet it was essential to keep things as native as possible. Kind of a sad consequence if that's the case.

I will always be a vinyl junkie and am glad to see a resurgence in it,s popularity,as for cds I buy them when that,s the only format
available.Right now I,m too old school for mp3,s,and the cassette deck in my old D-150 still works fine.

still love vinyl + cd is of course nice as well - mp3 pretty useful to have a chance to listen to some rare out of print things - but in general I still want to have a format that I can hold in my hands, I'd never would put away my old 12"...

Vinyl and cassettes. Probably because most of my stuff is on these 2 formats. LOL. I do buy some cds but not often. What irritates me most is the limited choices of stereos with dual cassette decks AND turntables. I'm all for advancing technology for better sound, but I don't like my choices taken away. I am very stubborn! I don't want to replace everything I have with cds only to then have a new format take over.

I'm nostalgic...I like the records and tapes!

I also like satellite radio (sirius 22 first wave!). Like someone else said, I love wondering what I will hear next. Sometimes I just want someone to play me some stuff without me having to set it up!
