No poll is complete without Howard Jones. And I'm surprised Vince Clark is'nt mentioned [:(][:p]

I think SuNomi phrased his original question correctly ---these are top notch keyboard players....I wouldn't have even included Thomas Dolby (who's received most of the votes...)

Nick Rhodes? Vince Clarke? you cant be serious! (those are the very 'one-finger' players I think SuNomi was reffering to) --no slight against those players by the way...I love Duran and Depeche...even my musician hero David Sylvian I wouldnt include on that list ----

I chose The Style Council's Mick Talbot. go listen to "Mick's Blessings" "Le depart" or "Dropping Bombs On The Whitehouse", and get back to me....

Well it's not like Vince Clark is like an Andy Fletcher, for whom the term "one finger keyboard player" was created. I doubt his keyboard is even plugged in, for Christ's sake. And I know Chris Lowe has done alot to create the image of the one fingered keyboard player but that was more of an act. The past few tours I've seen him on he's only raised his eyes from the keyboard to give a nod to the audience when Neil Tennant gives him a shout out towards the end of a show. He plays with such diligence, reading the notes from a Mac Powerbook as the bars move across the screen. I guess I'm more impressed with Vince's programming notoriety, another extremely diligent producer. If you listen closely to Erasure albums, there are so many little swirly sound things going on, each made up of individual notes which he puts together. Then these patterns are overlapped and put together like Lego...pretty amazing stuff IMHO. But live...maybe he's not the most impressive keyboardist. The thing is, with alot of these synth pop outfits, it's hard to know what's being played live and what is pre-recorded. I have a copy of the backing tapes Depeche Mode used during the World Violation tour and you'd be surprised how much is pre-recorded. Pretty much just the lead synths were played live and pretty much all by Alan. I saw Howard Jones twice and he was just surrounded by banks of keyboards, never staying still - that guy could play.

I don't see Gary Numan in the list so this isn't a valid "best keyboardist" poll. Also, though not technically New Wave, Brian Eno should have been mentioned.

Yup i like Alan Wilder, he's a brilliant keyboadist. Depeche is never the same without him. the one i hate most is Fletcher, yeah come to think of it mayvymarv, his keyboards must have been unplugged most of time during live shows, he just likes to wave his hands & moves like a poncey poof, urrggh horrible, what a show-off, that guy!

(Yes of course it was Clarke.)
He's an Awesome programmer, as are the petshopboys, Gary Numan, New Order...frankly, I love that type of music better than anything...
But AGAIN the original poll was about 'consumate musicianship'. there is a difference. Even in my own band Rotator, I can layer pianos over pianos with tons of strings and lots of "swirly-bits" and it sounds gorgeous....can I ACTUALLY play that? I can barely walk and chew gum.

I'm suprized it took this long for him to get mentioned.

If anyone needs to ask who I voted for then you obviously don't know me at all.[;)][:p]
