I love tons of upbeat stuff, but when I hear the 'term' beautiful, I think of things that are semi-mellow musical moments like:

Neil Diamond-"Stones"
10cc-"I'm Not In Love"
Thomas Lang-"Feels So Right"
Blanket Of Secrecy-"Say You Will"
Spandau Ballet-"True"
Midge Ure-"Dear God"
Thomas Dolby-"Airwaves"
Paul McCartney-"Waterfalls"
Fischer-Z-"Further From Love"
Peter Gabriel-"Don't Give Up"
Big Country-"Chance"
Marillion-"Easter"
Fixx-"Are You Satisfied"
Rupert Hine-"Heart Of The Matter"
Tears For Fears-"Closest Thing To Heaven"
Split Enz-"Stuff And Nonsense"
Kingston Trio-"Scotch And Soda"

and many more....those are just the ones poised at the top of my head..

My picks:

Cattle and Cane-by the Go-Betweens

Assembly-Never, Never-I swear to god Feargal sings this song with so much emtion-I think his voice is going to crack open. As much as I love my 'tones music-Feargal sings this as though he was born to sing this one song.

I would interpret "Beautiful songs" to be ones that are slower and very melodic, and just downright good songs no matter how you slice it. And for that reason, many of them were hits.

A few I love are:

38 Special - Second Chance
Steve Perry - Foolish Heart
The Lover Speaks - No More "I Love You's"
Chris DeBurgh - Lady In Red
Bronski Beat - Smalltown Boy
Howard Jones - No One is To Blame
Breathe - Hands to Heaven
Johnny Hates Jazz - Shattered Dreams
Berlin - Take My Breath Away
Fleetwood Mac - Everywhere
Martika - Toy Soldiers
Dan Fogelberg - Lonely in Love
Foreigner - I Want to Know What Love Is
Madonna - Live to Tell
Benjamin Orr - Stay the Night

Of course, not all beautiful songs are hits. Baltimora's "Pull the Wire" and Evelyn Champagne King's "'Til Midnight" are both amazing songs, and pretty much anything by Freur is beautiful.

Then there are songs that give me goosebumps, which isn't neccessarily because they're beautiful, but because they're evocative in some way or another. Songs such as: Mike & The Mechanics - Silent Running or Icehouse - Trojan Blue, which is truly haunting. Also, I get goosebumps whenever I hear the film score from "Transformers: The Movie" but that's probably just me....

After hearing Cock Robin's "When your heart is weak" last night, I'd absolutely add it to this thread.....

you know, I have to agree with these 2. They just pop out at me for being quite beautiful. And the singing (vocals). "Live to Tell" came out when I did not care for Madonna at all, and I still loved it. There is a certain evocative quality about these 2.
