<br>This is very entertaining reading.[:D]

I agree pretty much with your reasons as stated above.
I'd second IMAGE OVER SUBSTANCE, particularly if it really co-opted their musicianship, or rather, tried too hard to cover up lack of musicianship with image 'n' flash.

I didn't like gimmicks. Bands like Sigue Sigue Sputnick and Haysi Fantaysee (exept I LOVE "Shiny Shiny") really irritated me. But for me, it was no big deal, b/c then I just chose not to listen to it and it was all good.

So really, most of my "hate" would be reserved for formulaic Top 40 tripe. Too much sell-out, overproduced, schlocky, ballady hype.

Finally, I was going to say "overproduced" music, but that's not really what randy was getting at. It's not so much that I didn't like that artist, but that I didn't like that type of music. We all have some faves that occasionally had some overproduced, glossy music (just look at one of my faves, Duran Duran).

As a vocalist myself, it would have to be the singer's voice. Everytime I hear Ian Astbury of The Cult or that godawful Gene Loves Jezabel I cry out in pain. The ears bleed. It must be that wierd range (plus the fact that She Sells Sanctuary sounds exactly like Firewoman which sounds exactly like Love Removal Machine and on and on...)

When an artist tries too hard to be shocking, rebellious, edgy, hard rock, punk or goth, but end up as another fucking cliché.

Boring same old expected "outrageous" rock outfits, boring same old stupid scowl on their faces when lip syncing in their videos, and their worse offense, boring same old songs.

Oh, I totally agree with you on Ian Astbury, but I think that Gene Loves Jezebel had great vocalists for the type of music they were performing. I mean, I think "Desire" would SO not work as a song with more professional-sounding vocals. BTW, I'm a trained choir singer so I too kinda overfocus on vocals, though I'm more anal retentive over choral singing than anything else. So.

As we know, New Wave is composed of many sub-genres which I define for the sake of simplification as Gentle, Mainstream and Power New Wave. Now the Power NW is precisely led by bands like The Cult, Gene Loves Jezebel, The Sisters of Mercy, The Mission UK, Siouxsie and the Banshees, X'Mal Deutschland etc. Therefore If U don't like those bands, I'm afraid that U are depriving yourself of a big chunk of the NW library, actually one third...[:D]

Oh, fanciz. I do like the Sisters Of Mercy, Siouxsie & The Banshees, and their ilk, though I'd classify them as classic goth rock, really. I know they started out punk/post-punk, but then they got darker and darker and really, that's the essence of classic goth, isn't it?

Oh, just thought about one more thing: When "musicians" (you'll see why I put that word into quotation marks) try to gain fame by whoring themselves on more established musician types. The lead singer chick from The Distillers is the most recent example of this groupie-esque behavior. She leapt from the leader of Rancid to the leader of Queens Of The Stone Age with the agility of a wild gazelle, and twice as quickly too. But I guess she never did make it lying on her back, did she? Too little talent (ha), while (the poppier non-groupie) Pink sells like hotcakes (ha).

That sums up the rock music scene today for me...[:(]

She sounds so much like Courtney Love to me and she looks kinda like her too, perhaps she is a doppelganger? Look what happened to Ms Love that's tragic because Hole were a good band and just starting to go places...

Personally I don't like classifications very much particularly when they come from the bright boys of the record industry. I believe that they used the term new wave to boost the sales of their chickens like Devo, Blondie, Elvis Costello etc and then they shifted to new gimmicks like Power Pop recently. For heaven's sake what Power could one possibly find in a Pop group? As far as I am concerned a Power band is a band like Gene Loves Jezebel, particularly when Gene shouts at Jezebel![:D] So in my opinion we should refrain from using the term Power Pop as well as whatever sub-classifications, on this forum because we are somehow diluting the whole concept of New Wave. Along this line, the Smiths is a new wave band not an Indie Band, Siouxsie and the Banshees is a new wave band and not a Goth band, The Cult is a new wave band and not a metal band etc, etc. Let's carry the flag because if we don't who is going to do it? Going back to the topic of love/hate relationship with bands I would say that I don't hate any, I just like some more than others. Furthermore among the few hundred new wave bands, there are stalwarts that we can't bypass, they all brought something to the concept of new wave, maybe the mood like The Cure or The Smiths, the punch like The Sisters of Mercy, the melody like The Wild Swans or The Colourfield [:D], danceable tunes like the synth based bands etc That's the reason why I am always puzzled when I hear some newwavers saying that they can't stomach Morrissey, Gosh Morrissey is The Smiths a pilar of new wave, or that they hate this or that new wave stalwart...This being said, since we have different inclinations, I would understand the lack of interest for some secondary bands. Personally, I don't like much bands like ABC, Altered Images, A-ha, Erasure, Human league etc but I make it a point to carry at least one CD of those bands in my collection for the sake of representativeness.[:D]
